Knocking someone out with a blow to the head is deadly force.

That's why cops shoot people, instead of just trying to hit them in the head first. It's still deadly force, but is less effective.

Also, you don't want to get too close to a mob because that situation can quickly end up out of control - potentially with you on the ground, getting hit, kicked & disarmed. I watched the video that alleges Babbitt 'grabbed' one of the more violent insurrectionist's' bag and the alleged 'punch'.
That is one interpretation of a video that is unclear. There is --with that video ---no proof that she 'grabbed' it or merely touched it.
And the "punch" could have been something other....a flailing? an accidental arm projection?

But the most salient behavior in that foyer was that companion mobsters violently smashed a barricade door and achieved a breach that Babbitt voluntarily leaped into ...towards ...the officers who had ordered her to stop, to remove herself.

She didn't obey.
She died because of that unfortunate....and fatal....decision.

Most importantly, the officer saved the sheltering Representatives from harm by stopping the threat that was attempting to pass through the barricade.
