The problem is that it is based on a fallacy that when we started calling it the "Department of Defense" instead of the "Department of War", we lost some warrior ethos.

The reality was the Department of War (effectively the Army) was combined with the Navy into the new Department of Defense, because during World War II, making the Army and Navy co-equal cabinet-level departments created a lot of coordination problems.

But in Right Wing Mythology, we stopped calling it a "Department of War" and stopped winning wars, which is absurd.

The last war America won on its own was the Spanish-American War. In the World Wars, other countries did most of the heavy lifting; in Korea, we relied on Allies as well. In Vietnam, all our allies told us it was a bad idea, but we did it anyway.

You can understand this as we live with endless propaganda. So, the Department of War is a reality name as compared to Defense as we have had so many wars in so many ways that a day of peace is something profound. Americans have short memories. Corruption and traitorous ways many people will do for easier lives. 9/11 was one of those days of looking the other way. I mean, come on! How do you spend trillions of dollars over decades on federal alphabet named security and policing agencies and let this happen? Intrigue involved. In a way it is like Ukraine.
