That's simply untrue. The Sandy Hook killer simply took his mother's weapons. At least one of the Columbine killers weapons was taken from a parent.

But many guns used in crimes are purchased illegally. And in private sales not subject to background checks. Background checks won't solve everything, but they would make it more difficult. And so would mandating how guns are stored when owners are not home.

Moral: gun laws and sale restrictions will not end all gun crimes.

Personally, I think it's immoral and should be unconstitutional to not let a prior convicted felon possess a firearm unless his prior crimes involved violence. But that's no reason to let a guy amass literally an arsenal and thousands of rounds of ammunition without someone in law enforcement having the ability to wonder … why.
