Some 25 Nixon people went to jail after Watergate. If an impeachment trial were held against Nixon, facts could come out and Nixon could not only be removed from office, but face a criminal trial in a regular court. The answer to those very real problems was first, resignation, so no impeachment trial would take place, and to the possible criminal trial after resignation, was a pardon from the new President, Ford.
So Nixon resigned and Ford pardoned him. Problems solved.
