Just because a thread is about black people doesn't make it racists automatically.

The point is, China has always maintained a claim to these Islands. Not only the Qing (who ended in 1911) but the Republic of China (1911 - 1949) also claimed these Islands, and Taiwan claims these Islands as part of their pretense of being the legitimate government of China.

Taiwan's people have the right to not want to be part of Communist China.

Yet Taiwan still calls itself the "Republic of China".
They speak Mandarin.
They write in Hanzi
They are 98% Han Chinese, ethnically. (By comparison, the mainland is only 91% Han)

So this is ultimately a dispute between the Chinese over who is the legitimate government.

Long term it's going to happen eventually. As usual you only look at short term implications not long term.

Ideally, when Kim Jong Un goes to meet his ancestors, his sister might be a lot more amenable to opening up to the West.

Virginia once claimed all the land to its West going to the Pacific Ocean. Big deal.

That was the original dispute. At this point joining back doesn't make sense regardless who is in power.

The problem is we could have other issues happening in the future when we couldn't handle a NK collapse as easily as we could now.

War with Russia over Ukraine, War with China over the Spratleys or Taiwan. The collapse of South Africa. A nuclear war between India and Pakistan. All range from somewhat likely to not very likely, but all are possible outcomes of our current global situation.
