Why I carry a handgun.......

Yes, I am most certainly for real. Why are you getting upset just because I disagree with you?

Still waiting for that petty quote of mine that you don't seem able to find.
Your post #185, "Incorrect. This seems like this is an emotional subject for you."

You are drunk.

I've never used my fire extinguishers either but I still keep replacing them at the appointed expiration date. And my choice to buy and own fire extinguishers was made using the same principles of risk assessment; low likelihood of occurrence of a high magnitude consequence equals a high risk which should be mitigated. It's the same for seat belts or any other piece of safety equipment.
Your culture gives you wrong perception of guns. That why you treat them on the same level as a fire extinguisher. I don't except you to understand.

It's because you feel small, or weak, or underachieving, then you want to own a gun to give you the feeling of power over other people. Paranoia, anger, and insecurity gives you social anxiety and owning a gun is a quick and simple solution, but it makes you the most unsuitable person behind a firearm. It creates a shoot first, ask questions later scenario.
Well, I am old, and weak, and if some 20 something comes along and wants to harm me I want to be able to tell him to go away.

The gun allows me to do that.

But you're on your own. So good luck.

WOW ... glad I did a little research before I posted something stupid ... that's a ligitamate photo from 1993 ... color me shocked ... here's the article from the DailyMail ...

Both Princess Elizabeth and Margaret were given shooting lessons during WWII ... then sent to Calais to boost troop morale there ... General Patton was being really hard on his invasion forces there ...

We have mountain lions here ... and wolves ... granted, the brown bears are all gone ... but still, one is wise to pack heat in the wilderness ...

Folks have lived where you live since before written history ... the first European settlers here was 1843 AD ... "In England, 100 miles is a long way; in America 100 years is a long time" ...

No no no.
You are more likely to be struck by lightning twice than have this happen to you.
He said so.
There's almost zero violent crime in America, certainly not enough to warrant concern about you own safety.

We need to ban guns, tho - it's too easy for lunatics to get them and kill people.

Correct, so no need to take a gun whilst shopping. My many visits to the US has shown me that those animals don't shop in the likes of Walmart and Publix. We have guns, we take them to places where it's safe and appropriate to discharge a gun, in public is not one of those places. Flash a gun in public in the UK, DO NOT be surprised cops with firearms are screaming at you.

When you live in a gun safe country, Americans cannot and will never understand. Guns are not a problem, the culture is. America has a problem with it's culture with it's orientation towards guns.

Liar.

ding and if you think you're above others or special because you're and "engineer", you need to get that silliness out of your head. There's a part of your aloofness. I have kids, they're in their 20's now, so don't come the old soldier with me, I'm tuned into that game.

I don't need my culture or your culture to tell me that safety devices are tools which exist to mitigate risks. That's just good old fashioned common sense.

I don't see anything special about myself. Maybe try again.

That's the long and short of it.
Every day, we are told violent crime, especially gun-related violent crime, in the US is so out of control, we need more and more restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms, regardless of how ineffective and unconstitutional those restrictions might be.

Given this overwhelming threat we face, how is it unreasonable to conclude it might be a good idea to carry a gun for self-defense?
