Why I carry a handgun.......

So you think the psychologists are wrong 🤔

I'll stick with the psychologists. The risk migration excuse is a disguise for the social anxiety issue.
I don't think I need a psychologist for a risk assessment. I'm an engineer. I've run many risk assessments in my life.

There are two components to risk; likelihood and magnitude. The likelihood of needing a firearm is low but the magnitude of the consequence of not having one when one is needed is high. So it's the consequence of the risk which makes this a high risk that should be mitigated.

How low? You probably have more chance of being struck by lightning twice, but do you carry an earthing lightening rod? Or if you fly off on holiday (vacation) do you take a parachute? Risk assessment is a simple excuse to use, so that excuse can parked to one side.

Like I said before the likelihood is low but the magnitude of the consequence is high. If you do the math for all violent crimes the likelihood of being a victim is orders of magnitude greater than being struck by lightening which is why no one carries lightening rods but they do ground structures.

Yes, lower than being struck by lightning twice.

Incorrect. This seems like this is an emotional subject for you.

I see your error. I don't carry to avoid being shot by a gun. I carry to prevent myself from being a victim of crimes, especially violent ones. I carry a gun to level the playing field against men of ill will trying to do me - or those I love - harm.

The only one being petty here is you. I'm not trying to convince you to do as I do. You are trying to convince me to do as you do. And when I don't, you get angry and lash out.

What was it that you think I wrote that was petty?

I'm nearly 60, never needed a gun for the fallacy of self defence. That myth was never indoctrinated into me, but I'm not American. If you got into a fight, you did the same as the other lad, you used your fists. We also have a culture where carrying a gun in public is a no.

Americans are taught myths and indoctrinated as kids, so you have all those social anxieties to control, a gun helps. We have guns to control vermin on farms etc.., and for sport (clay, pheasant shoots etc..).

You live in a crazy gun culture.

Good for you. I couldn't be happier for you to make that choice. But that isn't the choice I made. I made my choice based upon principles of risk management.

When the poster tries the aloofness tactic, "This seems like this is an emotional subject for you". Not interested in those petty tactics.

So in your lifetime, how often did your gun save you from thuggery?

I didn't try any aloofness tactics. I explained the reasoning of my choice. That's it.

Feel free to quote the post you found petty. Because there was one, you would have already quoted it.

Are you for real? I'll tell you what, you quit the alcohol and get back to me. I just quoted what you said in #185 as aloofness, as petty.

I've never used my fire extinguishers either but I still keep replacing them at the appointed expiration date. And my choice to buy and own fire extinguishers was made using the same principles of risk assessment; low likelihood of occurrence of a high magnitude consequence equals a high risk which should be mitigated. It's the same for seat belts or any other piece of safety equipment.

Yes, I am most certainly for real. Why are you getting upset just because I disagree with you?

Still waiting for that petty quote of mine that you don't seem able to find.
