Saddam's secular Iraq was powerful enough to counter the Islamic fundamentalism of Iran. Afghanistan will be run by the Taliban in less than 5 years and no US president could have prevented that once the feudal structure was destroyed by Bush as he attempted to build a Western style democracy.

Whatever you may think of Hamas, they are popular with the Palestinian people and serve as a conduit for Iranian influence. Bringing them into the peace process will counter Iranian influence. I'm certainly not as impressed by Trump's foreign policy chaps as you are.
