I have a slightly different take... today - like thousands of years ago - people fought over land, claim they are moral for doing so and that God is on their side. So not much has changed over thousands of years. Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

No one knows for certain, but I don't think it's good. I'm beginning to see a pattern with this one. He doesn't want to openly say what he believes for fear of repercussions. The book that "Columbia" is holding is said to represent education and enlightenment, which will guide the westward progression. To me it could also represent the Bible and the 'divine right' of expansion from coast to coast. Many compared the westward march and the decimation of the native peoples to the occupation of the promised land of Canaan in Israel's day.

Hitler killed defenseless Jews. Some of the Canaanites were never defeated by the Israelites. Their wars lasted for decades.

Everything which begins has an ending. It's not hard to predict the downfall. The hard thing is to predict when it will happen. So I wouldn't read anything more into their legends than that. I certainly wouldn't use their legends to justify a wrong as a right. Especially when it's so easy to just say we did wrong and leave it at that. The worst thing we can do is to justify a wrong as a right.
