If you accept the gospels as being true, anyone who has ever lived or will ever live and has sinned is responsible for the death of Christ.

I have an unusual take on all of this. A common theme of the ancient Israelites is that God created an unfair world and demanded God make it right. God being God got exactly the world he wanted for whatever reason he wanted it and would not grant their demand. So God being God did the next best thing. He gave them justice by being born into this world to suffer death and pay his debt to mankind for their pain and suffering. So that when some jackanape lipped off to him about the unfair world he created, he would tell them he has already paid that debt. God has a wicked sense of humor. He commanded us to eat his flesh and drink his blood. Which tends to give credence to my unusual take on all of this.

Who does Matthew say is responsible?

If Matthew says that all Jews for all time are responsible for the Crucifixion of Jesus, Matthew is mistaken.

Instead, Mathew is only reporting what a small number of Jews said at the time.

Hatred of Jews needs to be understood psychologically because here is no rational reason for it. Jews are good people. One reason is religious bigotry. Fortunately, that is fading in the West. Christian conservatives think the existence of Israel is a sign that the Second Coming of Christ. Therefore, they support Israel. Support for Israel easily segues into admiration of Jews.

Secular Jew hate is caused by resentment over the fact that most Jew are intelligent, successful, and prosperous. Jew haters have spent their lives watching Jews get better grades, better jobs, and better incomes. Now they fear being fired and replaced with more intelligent, better paid Jews, who will perform their jobs faster, better, and with less effort.

Resentment against Jewish intelligent is even a factor at elite universities. Some Gentiles on the student body there resent the fact that there are so many Jews there.
