Ah….is THAT what she said? If so, of course it’s not true. My parents were good friends with a black family in our synagogue, and we invited them to Shabbos lunch a number of times. (And Vice versa).
I attend shul in Singapore. We had two Singaporean Chinese families that were Lubavitch. We even had a diplomat that from an African country who was a crypto-Jew.
But regardless of whether race is a social construct, among those who believe it DOES exist, there are some who insist Jews are a separate race every much as Asians are, for example. Any ideas as to why they say this?
I hate to over-simplify it but I could start calling a dog a cat and if enough people agreed with me or had a agenda to where calling a dog a cat benefitted them then who knows what that could grow into in 120 years.
I think we are seeing that with the new groomer terms coming out now like "dead-naming".
"Race" can't be determined by science, only broad stoke ethnicity can.
"Race" thus "racism" is just a social construct. The word "racism" was not even coined till 1902 by a former Union general when referring to how Native Americans were treated.
LOL....I guess it could be claimed that blacks "appropriated" the term from Native Americans.
Language itself is a human construct, and every word we use was first coined by someone. Distinct races are observable, therefore there must be a scientific basis for it.
For most of human history (and pre-history), travel was hard, and human populations were isolated into different parts of the world. Thus races, or what ever you want to call them -- isolated groups of people that form gene pools. Today people are more mobile, thus much more people of mixed race/gene pools. With more and more mixing of races, the distinctions between "races" are becoming more and more blurred. So race is becoming a moot point, as it should be.
It came about when Europe was dividing into Nations and cutting of 'nation states' with those they considered were the same as themselves and with the animosity towards Jews from Christians lessoning partly because people were not so religious and the term anti-semetic was created by a German William Marr in 1879. The concept of Jews as a race apparently comes from 'scientific racism' of the 19th Century anti-Semitism | History, Facts, & Examples
They apparently believed that because Judaism came from the ME so did Jews. It is also true that the early leading Zionists or certainly some of them also believed in Jews as being a distinct race and wanted Israel for that race to flourish.
[ What first united the Jewish people was leaving Egypt and becoming a Nation. That is how Jews mostly saw themselves as since then, and I believe still do ]
More than sixty years after the death of Hitler, the defeat of Nazism, and the horrors of the Holocaust, the concept of a Jewish race is still alive and well in the minds of too many. This book is an attempt to destroy such a concept from both a biological and historical point of view. To be a race Jews would have to have been isolated from other populations. However, they never avoided crossbreeding and converted many non-Jews. In other words, from Day One Jews have married non-Jews, and therefore there is no way to genetically characterize them as a race. Nevertheless, many people find it difficult to accept the ideas that Judaism is not hereditary, but a religion, and that Jews who abandon the Jewish faith, whether they adopt another religion or none at all, are no longer Jews.
The author came to write this book for personal and scientific reasons. He spent four years of his youth under the Vichy government, which was the most virulent anti-Semitic regime that had ever ruled France. In its efforts to "cleanse the Jewish dirt" from French society, Vichy devised a broader definition of a Jew than that of the German Nazis. It classified a person with two Jewish grandparents as Jewish, which meant that children of a Jew and non-Jew could face deportation to a death camp. This definition applied to the author's family because some of his ancestors had practiced the Jewish faith. Soon after its establishment Vichy required all persons who fit the description to register as Jews. The wisdom and courage of the author's parents in refusing to register undoubtedly saved the whole family from death. Yet the author's whole life has been marked by the fact that he was discriminated against when he was a teenager. It is only recently that, by writing this book, the author has been able to deal with the Nazi persecution, and his mind is at peace.
As a trained geneticist, he became convinced that there are not and never were human races. In the last twenty years, an increasing number of anthropologists and biologists have reached the same conclusion. They argue that there is no way to genetically characterize race, because no human population has ever been isolated long enough from other populations to avoid "crossbreeding." The history of the Jews, in particular, supports this thesis. From Day One they had children with non-Jews. Hence, biologically, Jews are not different from non-Jews.
Although many volumes have been written that condemn anti-Semitism and deal with its history, only two treat the myth of the Jewish race. Oddly, though both maintain that there is no such thing as a Jewish race, their authors write about Jewish blood and Jewish genes, which are misleading concepts as harmful and pernicious as the term race itself.
Remember the New World Order conspiracy theory? It was all about global elites and the international Jew. It's a hard right fundamentalist Christian conspiracy belief.
Promoting conspiracy theories is "nationalism" and is very dangerous.
Most just believe Jews are so different that they might as well be a different race. Also most don't like Jews, but don't that God has placed the Jews under the curse of being ostracized from the rest of mankind.
First, let’s establish that Jews are not a race. There are Asian Jews, Caucasian/white Jews, and black Jews. Admittedly, they are more than a religion, and it would be fair to consider them a “people” who span across the three major races.
WHY do some people, and I’ve seen them on this forum, insist that there is a fourth race: the Jews. Do the people who want to segregate those of Jewish ancestry as a separate race tend to be antisemitic?
- whites
- blacks
- Asians
- Jews
I’m interested in thoughts as to the why behind this.
It's almost universally Jews who proclaim a distinct race or ethnicity. I have seen Jews on twitter say "as a white person who is Jewish" and then 6 months later that same person says
"As someone who is Jewish and not white".
