It's because they know that satiety is reached in about twenty minutes. If they eat slowly they won't get to eat as much by the time satiety (satisfaction) is reached. This is the normal pattern of gluttony in America which leads to the desired condition of obesity.

The "hog trough" people are what get me, they fill their plates to overflowing at a buffet when they know full well that they can go back for more if they want.

I watched a table of 300#+ black women one day and I must say, the amount of food they got on one plate was impressive....Almost some sort of retarded "art form". You could tell it came from years of practice.

I used to hit the buffet after church with a bunch of other bachelors. Some skinny guys piled their plates high and still went back for seconds. Either they had a very hard physical job or they hadn't eaten all week.

A habit forced on me in boot camp and never completely shed.

I remember that as well. "Eat and get out!" -Mess Sargeant

That was mainly breakfast. Lunch and supper were more laid back.

I could almost understand it if they were construction workers on their lunch break and did it to save time.

Some of those skinny guys have really fast metabolisms--speaking from experience. I was always the biggest eater in the family--was kidded about having a hollow leg, but I never got over 130 lbs at 6'-1" until I was married and in my late 20s. All time highest weight was 198. My metabolism has slowed now and I don't eat nearly as much, but the weight is stable at 175.

My coworkers laugh at how I "eat all day", and in a sense it's true. But they don't realize that I'm nibbling and it could take hours for me to get through a sandwich and a vacuum bottle full of hot soup. Still, they are always under the impression that eat alot. I'm actually 182 lbs and just a hair under 6ft. I get so tired of hearing "awww, how do you eat so much and stay looking so fit??"

Sometimes on my day off I don't eat anything until the afternoon except maybe a banana and a cup of coffee.

LOL, I'll never forget that first day. I had finally gotten through the chow line and sat down, took my first bite when I heard "GET UP, GET OUT" I ate standing up in line to dump my tray. You learn to eat fast or you starve.

I find it funny youre at buffets calling out people at a buffet. I cant remember the last one I went to that wasnt simply the breakfast in a Marriott.

I have seen college kids, in good shape, pile it on and come back to pile it on, at smorgasbord buffets, years ago. In their case, it was because they ate shitty, the rest of the week, living off campus, not having access to the dining halls.

Maybe it's like my large family taught me to eat fast because he that eats the fastest gets to the seconds before it's all gone.

For some it is because of the military. For others it may be because they want to get back to call of duty. either way, doesn't matter. I would rather eat with someone who is done in 15 minutes than one of those people who take 45 minutes for each course, and right when you think you are free, they have to order dessert and coffee.

It's been a few years now....My mom liked to go to the Wood Grill Buffet in C-Ville when she was still able to go to UVA for treatments. I would drive her down....She's dead now.

I was never a fan of the hog troughs, I much preferred the now long closed K&W Cafeteria they used to have there.....They had a kick-ass fish dinner.

Whenever I eat out with friends it's at a buffet where we spend hours in conversation so eating time is irrelevant. I eat slowly so while most others have had seconds and are on dessert I'm still on my first (and only) plate.

If eating is my only reason, I stay home. If I go out for a meal--and pay the corresponding inflated price, I am there for the experience and camaraderie and I like to enjoy that.
