I wonder if Trump erroneously believed and accepted the legal experts who suggested that "by the nature of being president he declassifies at his own pleasure" or whatever the argument was.

I believe Dershowitz made a similar argument at Trumps impeachment and on other occassions in regards to classification of documents.

Him having the authority obviously doesn’t mean he actually did it. Actually doing it is a formal process that involves paperwork. It’s not like he can just lay in bed one night at 3AM and say to himself “I’m declassifying that shit. No one needs to know, though.”
