George Washington's views on political parties in America | Washington Times Communities

We really should evaluate where we are going in this country, because if we continue down this road, where we are so bitterly divided among republicans and democrats, we will not endure. Washington warned the young republic in his Fair-well Address that political parties would be the demise of the country, and it seems to be coming true. We need to get over our petty differences, and unite as we did after 9/11. It felt so good to be an American after that tragic day, because it didn't matter if you were white, black, Chinese, gay, straight, democrat or republican, we all were helping each other out. We were united. It really was a beautiful thing.

If we think about it, we don't want to hate one another, we want to live by each others happiness, not by misery. There is room for everyone in the world, and there are an abundance of resources to provide for everyone. Life can be free and beautiful. But sadly greed has poisoned our souls, and we have lost the way. We have thrown up ethical and moral boundaries which have fortified walls of hate. This has led to misery and petty squandering. We think too much, and feel too little. But we need humanity that has seemed to escape us. We don't need cleverness, we need kindness. For without these qualities life becomes bitter. We must heed those who seek to stifle human progress. America used to soar in science and medicine, cured diseases, cherishing intelligence, we didn't belittle it. We have to unite once again, and return to what we originally stood for, or I fear we will not last.
