Yes, it is better done locally, with community involvement, govt involvement, nutritionists involvement, non profits, farmers involvement....
Being a smaller state, with fewer people living here....Maine was able to accomplish a liked healthier school food program, and provide it for all children in school, in the whole State.
I think less populated states have more ability to accomplish such a feat, because we tend to have more of a community commitment.... No one knocks on your door to just chat and share apple pie, but if someone in the community is in need, the people come through and help....
The article explains all that we went through to accomplish healthy school meals for all....
January 9, 2023 In 2021, Maine passed landmark legislation guaranteeing healthy school meals for all students, but the groundwork leading up to this began years before. Full Plates Full Potential was founded in 2014 out of what originally began as a legislative task force to address Maine’s high...
Take a look at this wonderful, delicious and healthy spread I got at a restaurant in Cambodia. Quail eggs in the second picture a very strong source of protein and other health benefits.
But go to the USA in every major city especially the inner cities… you got a Kentucky fried chicken and McDonald’s on every street corner
According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, more than 2 in 5 adults are obese, and nearly 1 in 5 children are obese. Furthermore, 19 states in America have obesity rates over 35 percent, increased from 16 states just last year. A decade ago, no states had obesity rates above 35 percent! Obesity is linked to a number of health ailments, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and a number of cancers such as breast and colorectal. If that wasn’t enough, the annual medical cost of obesity was nearly 173 billion dollars in 2019 alone.

I had occasion to go through old pics recently from the 70s. In our grade was, sadly, "the big girl". She was just so much bigger than the rest of us. We all thought she was HUGE--this was elementary school.
When I saw the pics I was astounded. I have been teaching since the 90s so I know what kids look like--and now, she blends in. A little bigger than average, but not much.
This cannot be put down to just more screen time or whatever. Something is going very wrong.
Why not? You can tell which kids are getting exercise or not. My nephew has two kids and they do a sport all year round, there is never a time they are not doing one sport or another and their kids are fit and the right size. Which is ironic as my nephew and his wife are both massively overweight.

Obviously, both diet and exercise play a role in why kids are getting so fat, but I think the sedentary lifestyle of kids nowadays plays a far bigger role in them being fat than diet does.
When I was a kid I remember in the summer me and my friends would almost every day combine what little money we had to go to the convenience store to buy as much pop and 25cent Little Debbie snacks as we could afford
We ate junk as much as we could like kids today, but the difference was we also exercised. We rode our bikes to the store to buy the junk food. Then we rode them again to the park to eat them. Then we’d ride our bikes to the public pool, or to whichever kids house that had a trampoline.
We burned most of those calories right off.
We didn’t stay home all day. Our moms wouldn’t let us even if we had wanted to. And they certainly didn’t transport us all over town like a chauffeur.
If anyone is to blame, it’s obviously the parents of today

Never heard that phrase before but, yeah, if you thought you were gonna spend your summer playing Nintendo back in those days, most moms were quick to kick you out the house
I don’t know why parents today are so bad at that. We were fine and it’s no more dangerous out there today then it was back then

Ever watched the Saturday morning kids shows. They also come on right after school. Once the kids get a taste that's all they want to do. I wonder if kids even know how to play outdoors.

You don't see kindergarten kids walking to and from school today. My trip was about 3/4 of a mile one way. My mother showed me the way once, after that I walked, along with other kids along the way. I don't recall ever seeing a parent drop off or pick up a kid from school (from kindergarten through 6th grade).
We didn't need our parents to tell us, we wanted to get out of the house and be with our friends. We often played until well after dark. If there were girls around us guys just talked smart and acted dumb. My grandmother, and other parents as well, would go outside and yell for us when it was time to come in. We were always within earshot when we were younger.
