1. Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin both gaffed by pointing to the Russians as a threat, before a few international incidents that put them closer to being a threat. So GOP strategists have righty media promoting the downturn in relations as proof that we should have elected Mitt Romney.

2. It's the last "war" they think we won, and the GOP took credit for it.

3. The GOP has righty media promoting it further to support the more subtle narrative that Obama hates America and is a pussy.

who once said that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a major geopolitical disaster of the century. If you look at his actions in the Crimea and Ukraine it seems that wants to recreate at least some of that.

It was a disaster. Gorbachev wanted to play free market. The Soviet Union was not destroyed. It did not fall. The dissolution was brought about by Gorbachev. The financial collapse occurred afterward and Russia, having been a superpower before, is itching to get back into the game. The US is going to do all that it can to prevent it.
