Why are gas prices still so expensive?

Hi. I live in Hammond, Indiana. Hammond is in northwestern Indiana, located riiiiiight next to thee southside of Chicago..

Gas prices here in Hammond are usually about $3.29 a gallon.. and it’s been that way since like January 2024..

(I believe..)

(IIRC.)

Thee most expensive gas price I saw today here in Hammond was $3.49 per gallon for regular unleaded gas at a Shell. Thee cheapest I saw today was $3.11 per gallon..

(The local Nice n’ Easy gas station always has thee cheapest gasoline prices in Hammond..)

If I cross the border into Illinois/Chicago though, I can expect to see plenty of gas prices at $3.49/$3.59/$3.69 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel though.

Anyways, I read that the gas prices got expensive above $3 a gallon in January 2021 in Indiana because Joe Biden and the democrats like to ship gasoline/oil by BNSF train to support Warren Buffet, instead of using oil pipelines..

(If that’s true, why have thee gasoline prices not fallen under Trump?)

The price of oil per barrel fell to about $57 in May 2025, but still, there was no drop in gasoline prices here in thee Chicagoland area when that happened..

Anyways, what’s up with the somewhat/kinda expensive gas prices in USA/Chicagoland area?

Do you think the war in Ukraine is causing gas prices to be above $3 a gallon in a lot of places?

I remember in 2022, Saudi Arabia cut/reduced thee amount of oil they were exporting to USA, because they didn’t like how Joe Biden was exasperating/intensifying the war in Ukraine, and putting all these sanctions on Russia. Anyone know if that Saudi Arabia oil cut is still in effect? Think that’s why gasoline prices are still so pricey-ish?

I believe the keystone pipeline was still being used under Biden’s term, but an extension to it wasn’t built? Anyone know if the keystone pipeline is being used under Trump at all, and if he plans to build thee extension on it? Anyone know how much of an effect that all has on the gas prices?

Well alright. Donald Trump vowed he would lower the gasoline prices if he became president, but he has failed to do so..

Anyone know why? Anyone know what’s up with that..?

Jw.
When I voted for Trump, I expected gasoline prices to go down drastically because Trump said they would. Now I’m wondering what the hell happened. They’re still above 3. He promised below 2.

it's regional, perhaps insurance and transport is higher in your region due to crime rates in Chicago, or refiners closer to your region have heftier costs to refine store and deliver their refined product.

So why are gasoline prices high right now in the US?

AI Overview

Gasoline prices in the US in 2025 are influenced by a combination of seasonal factors, ongoing geopolitical events, and fluctuations in global oil production and demand. While prices are currently below their 2024 peaks, they are still elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels due to a variety of interconnected factors.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Seasonal Factors:
The annual transition to summer-blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce, typically leads to a price increase.

As more people travel during the summer, demand for gasoline rises, further contributing to price increases.

Planned maintenance at refineries can temporarily reduce supply, pushing prices higher.

2. Global Oil Market Dynamics:

  • OPEC production increases:
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has been increasing oil production, which has caused some volatility in the market.
    • Geopolitical instability:
Events in oil-producing regions can disrupt supply and drive up prices.

    • Crude oil prices:
The cost of crude oil, which makes up a significant portion of the price of gasoline, is a major factor influencing prices at the pump.

    • Inflation and interest rates:
High inflation and interest rates can put additional pressure on consumer spending, impacting demand for gasoline.
3. Other Contributing Factors:
Ongoing supply chain issues can impact the cost of refining and distributing gasoline.

Refinery utilization rates can affect the supply of gasoline and contribute to price fluctuations.

Changes in demand for gasoline, both domestically and internationally, can influence prices.

In conclusion, a complex interplay of seasonal factors, global oil market dynamics, and other macroeconomic conditions are contributing to elevated gasoline prices in the US in 2025.

Oh good god bidens been out of ofgice for many months. Not buying one ounce of that.
I am. That stupid legislation the first two years and all of the EO's reversing Trump. Previous legislation and ways can cost us. Oil was running smooth. Until it wasn't. Then the Progs blamed the Ukraine war on it. Except we were producing way more than we needed and pipelines were being built as an incentive. The elites interfered again.

So which is it Candy Ass?

King Trump will bring down prices....... on day 1.
Except when it doesn't happen, your safe place is blaming Blue States or Blue Mayors in Red States.
It's ALWAYS the blame game with you.

What Did Trump Actually Say?

  • In August 2024 at a rally in Bozeman, Montana, Trump said:

  • He made similar remarks again in August, stating he would slash energy and electricity prices by half within 12–18 months. Congressman Lloyd Doggett
  • On October 1, 2024, on PBS NewsHour:

  • And in a New Jersey speech in August 2024, he emphasized energy, saying:
They are down from last year. $3.44 down to $3.16.

Are you denying that there was a gas tax INCREASE on July 1, 2025 in WA with more increases of 2% scheduled annually, moron? Maybe you should educate yourself--you clearly failed to educate anyone else in WA during your career at the public trough. Now tell us again how you don't support democrats. Typical lying democrat.
They are idiots in Washington, I am glad I am out of that place, tax and spend nuts in Olympia.

How did that ^^^ work out for you as you climbed the ladder at McDonalds to Head Janitor?
You were proud of yourself, but now as an old man needing that NAP, you must wonder why you didn't advance.

From burger flipper to Janitor.
No, Head Janitor.

I remember I took a pay cut leaving McDonalds and going to work at a bank. Dumb move on my part, I would have had my own store and a six figure income, instead of working at a dead end bank job. I got smart and started my own business.

Democrats spent the last 4 years at war with oil. This increased its price and enriched their Russian and Iranian allies for there campaigns against the west.

Democrats = traitors

Wow, that was so many months ago, how much longer will you need to lie for Trump?

The average gas price in Hammond is around $2.75 per gallon.

If you're paying more than that, it's probably because you're stupid

It could take a while for stored gas, purchased during high prices, to work it's way out of the supply chain. Gas prices are going down, just not as fast as most folks would like, including me, BTW.
