What makes you think Dems don't advocate a flat tax? I do. This poll is from 2005, but I'm guessing the percentage today would be even higher in favor of a flat tax. And by the way, it's not a subject that is politically divided, so couching your question in that manner is silly.

Equality isn't taxing a guy who makes 20k a year the same as a guy who makes 250k a year, if that's what you are getting at.

Because most Dems keep talking about how the rich need higher taxes. In other words, different treatment for different people. Funny how Dems don't say a beautiful woman who didn't earn her advantages should pay higher taxes to even things out, but if you have some unattractive but hard working woman who started up an internet company and made millions, than she's supposed to sacrifice. I find that horrifyingly unfair to the point where it appears socialism is nothing more than a hate movement against producers. If not, then why not tax the people who start with advantages like beautiful women, great atheletes, awesome singers, alpha looking guys and so forth???

The flat tax hypothesis is worth looking at, but it would require closing existing loopholes which ironically the wealthy do not want. But since you mention Meg Whitman (I assume you are referring to her), isn't she the one who, with all the techno gadgetry available, chose to do a really really cheap TV video ad with fake sheep? She could have PAID some real live people to work on a really really effective ad.
