Whoops! CIA Man Retracts Claim on Waterboarding

What it boils down to is that the CIA says that they used waterboarding on three people under very controlled circumstances. They say that they gained information that stopped a 9-11 type attack on the west coast.

But there is no independent verification of what they claim. Tapes that would have supported the written record were destroyed.

Of course there is no independent verification. The objective is to stop terrorist attacks, not public debate.

An independent verification does not mean "public debate". If you don't have that possibility, then the system can be readily abused. Destroying the tapes effectively ended any possibility of determining the truth beyond - "trust me". And no manipulative fear of terrorist attacks would make me want to give up those checks and balances.

This is an intelligence war. Any information that the enemy has about sources and methods, only makes the US more vulnerable to further terrorist attacks.

The tapes no longer had value to the CIA, and they were destroyed, as should have happened. The tapes are now a security threat. If the information one the tapes were leaked it could get to the enemy and lead to further terrorist attacks.

And no one will ever know the truth. How convenient.

That's not a hypothetical. That is the reality that the CIA operatives had to deal with.

All other methods to extract that information failed. When asked about terrorist attacks, they taunted the operatives simply saying "soon you will know".

This was the last resort and it worked. It stopped terrorists from flying a plane into a LA building.

According to who? The CIA and a beleagured administration who's asses were in a sling over Abu Ghraib and torture. Nor was there uniform agreement that "all other methods failed" - in fact rather the opposite.

And yeah the sources for this is the CIA memo, and the CIA director. Those are the sources that count.

Do you really think it's wise to put all your belief and trust into just one source - the CIA? No way to verify? That's an awful lot of trust in an agency known to be less than honest.

The anonymours sources, and the ones, who were not involved in these cases directly, are utterly irrelevant.

In other words only the CIA is relevant, trust the CIA and what ever they say, hold them above accountability and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

How and to what extent torture shall be used is a question, which leads us away from the central problem:
How to fight terrorism and what to do to end the threat by terror.

IMHO the whole "War on Terror" leads into the wrong direction.
Wars can be won or lost or end in a straw. But they end, one day or the other.

Terrorism exists since the first humans organized themselves in societies and it will exist in the future as well. So "winning" this war will - IMHO - not happen.
Look at all the terrorist groups in the world and how long it took to at least keep them down:
Northern Ireland - 30 years
Spain - still going on
Palestine - still there
Germany - RAF declared their fight is over, but the terrorists mostly disappeared somewhere
etc.
Most terrorism dried out after a long time or disappeared, but it can appear again any time. But they mostly did not capitulate or were decisively beaten by armed forces.

So, in general you will need a long time to wear down groups like Al Quaida, the IRA or whoever.

What is the problem of the US now - IMHO - is that the most Americans seems to lack this perspective. They want solutions and they want it quick.
This leads to torture. Which is stupid again, because you can not define precise where this starts or ends.
Also, we are dealing with people who perform gods will, so a little pain will not break them.

The moral issue leads into a mud of ethical problems:

Where does torture begin and when can it be perhaps be justified ?

There was in Germany a kidnapping case some years ago, where the police had the kidnapper in custody and tried to get the information, where the kidnapped child was hidden. The very life of the boy was in danger, so the vice-chief of police threatened the kidnapper to inflict pain until he told where the child was. The kidnapper told where the child was, but police only found it dead.

As the vice-chief had properly filed his threat, he willingly exposed himself to a formal investigation of his doing.

The court later decided, that:

- nothing can justify the violation of the basic principles of our constitutuion: the dignity of man
- the vice-chief was exposed to a dilemma, which was unsolvable.
- as he had properly filed his threat of torture, he had himself exposed to the investigation and the court acknowledged, that he tried to act in a responsible way.
Therefore he came away with a fine of 10800 EUR.

I tell this story to underline my point:
We -as the West - represent the GOOD, the forces of order. Or we should at least.
We will - in the long run - only succed, if our deeds are coherent with our principles.
Terrorists will have a far more difficult business, if people do fear the terrorists more than they fear us. Will this expose us to a bigger terrorist threat ?
Impossible to say, as we will never have a full picture.

As some failed attacks here in Germany prove, it takes only a few guys, some gas canisters and a box of nails to kill hundreds of people in trains.
We will have to live with this threat for a foreseeable future and should learn to do so.

Torturing will not make us more or less safe, but we will undermine the fundaments our society is built upon.

I firmly believe, that there is a very distinctive line between our way of living and barbarism, and this line should not be crossed. We should be a beacon to mankind and prove that our idea of civilization is better.

Actually the justice department knew as well. The CIA memo was to the justice department.

"The quotations in this part of the Justice memo were taken from an Aug. 2, 2004 letter that CIA Acting General Counsel John A. Rizzo sent to the Justice DepartmentÂ’s Office of Legal Counsel.

Manipulative fear of terrorist attacks? Days of Terror: A Photo Gallery

And no one will ever know the truth. How convenient.

We know the truth. You would rather believe the conspiracy theorists rather than the people in the front lines actually dealing with it.

According to who? The CIA and a beleagured administration who's asses were in a sling over Abu Ghraib and torture. Nor was there uniform agreement that "all other methods failed" - in fact rather the opposite.

Uniform agreement between whom? The conspiracy theorists and the CIA operatives who were actually there? That's rather silly. The left wingers have simply manufactured a political issues for themselves.

And yes all other methods failed.

From the CIA memo to the justice department.

Before they were subjected to “enhanced techniques” of interrogation that included waterboarding, KSM and Zubaydah were not only uncooperative but also appeared contemptuous of the will of the American people to defend themselves.
CNSNews.com - CIA Confirms: Waterboarding 9/11 Mastermind Led to Info that Aborted 9/11-Style Attack on Los Angeles

In particular, the CIA believes that it would have been unable to obtain critical information from numerous detainees, including KSM and Abu Zubaydah, without these enhanced techniques,” says the Justice Department memo. “Both KSM and Zubaydah had ‘expressed their belief that the general US population was ‘weak,’ lacked resilience, and would be unable to ‘do what was necessary’ to prevent the terrorists from succeeding in their goals.’ Indeed, before the CIA used enhanced techniques in its interrogation of KSM, KSM resisted giving any answers to questions about future attacks, simply noting, ‘Soon you will know.’”

After he was subjected to the “waterboard” technique, KSM became cooperative, providing intelligence that led to the capture of key al Qaeda allies and, eventually, the closing down of an East Asian terrorist cell that had been tasked with carrying out the 9/11-style attack on Los Angeles

Do you really think it's wise to put all your belief and trust into just one source - the CIA? No way to verify? That's an awful lot of trust in an agency known to be less than honest.

That's two departments. The CIA and justice departments. And yes I trust them. This is an intelligence war. Information is what stops terrorist attacks.

The anonymours sources, and the ones, who were not involved in these cases directly, are utterly irrelevant.

In other words only the CIA is relevant, trust the CIA and what ever they say, hold them above accountability and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

What man behind the curtain? The only thing you have that contradicts them are anonymous sources.

Yanno...there is something that bothers me. Pres. Bush took a lot of heat from the lefties over this. Why was the memo disclassfied under Obama, when Bush didn't declassify it even though it vindicates him?

It seems to indicate that this memo should not have been declassified at all, and that Obama was reckless in doing so.

Also, the arch leftwing speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi was told that waterboarding was used as well, and she didn't have an objection.

Source: Aide told Pelosi waterboarding had been used - CNN.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A source close to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now confirms that Pelosi was told in February 2003 by her intelligence aide, Michael Sheehy, that waterboarding was actually used on CIA detainee Abu Zubaydah.

Source says Nancy Pelosi didn't object about waterboard usage because she wasn't personally briefed about it.

This appears to contradict Pelosi's account that she was never told waterboarding actually happened, only that the administration was considering using it.

Sheehy attended a briefing in which waterboarding was discussed in February 2003, with Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, who took over Pelosi's spot as the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

This issue has really very little to do with waterboarding, it's about the democrat method of throwing enough shit on the wall and seeing what sticks.

America was built on the rights of the individual. It has protections for criminals regardless of what despicable act that criminal may commit. The concept of the "end justifies the means" was reprehensible to our founding fathers.
The idea that Americans are so willing to surrender the values and protections that we fought so hard to obtain is sad.

It may be sad...but to protect our way of life sometimes one must stoop to the level of your enemy however distasteful it may be to the pacifists.
Only a con would suggest stooping to the level of our enemies.

There level is targeting civilians. We don't do that.

However, if getting 3 arch terrorists wet stops a massive terrorist attack, I am all for it, and I bet most americans would be too.

I am reposting this.

The non torture rules are there to help protect our troops if they are captured.
If you support torturing prisoners then you do not support our troops.
Yea, i'm sure Al-qaeda and the Taliban would treat our troops with kid gloves upon their capture.

What they will do is saw their fucking heads off and post it on the web for all to see, including the families.

But then, waterbaording isn't torture so, the whole premise of this thread is moot, to say the least.

Christ, liberals are fucking idiots!:cuckoo:

HOW THE HELL would you know it STOPPED OLLIE!!!???

Because I read the CIA memo and they stated it in there. Obviously since you want them to be lying you didn't bother to even read it.

Oh yeah and OBVIOUSLY the CIA never LIED!

Gee the CIA are a bunch of liars and America is the most terrible country on earth because we used some water to save countless thousands of American lives.

Fuck you and your Un American Bullshit. It's so damned important for you that we are so evil, why don't you find a country that is nice and soft and gentle and move there. We lost 3000 people within a few hours time to these assholes and you want to play pattycake with them.

I'm glad that we had hard men in the right places to make the hard decisions and do the hard work. And they prevented a second major attack that you would have rather seen happen.

Obama's administration declassified and released the CIA transcript I guess that makes his administration a bunch of liars too, but then I regress.

People like you are the ones who would GIVE your freedoms away and wimper like a kicked puppy when the CIA comes for YOUR freedoms. What a schmuch you are. I'm sorry but if you want to trust EVERYTHING the CIA says then be my guest. They were ORDERED to produce those tapes and they DESTROYED them and you don't even QUESTION why.

Because the tapes were destroyed in 05, if i remember reading right and they were destroyed so that some idiot lawyer wouldn't broadcast them to the world showing and identifying CIA agents involved making them and their families targets.

And it is people like me who spent the majority of their adult live protecting the freedoms that you want to cry about and give to terrorists. I do not whimper asshole you are the one crying about how evil we are. And at the same time pissing on the memory of those 3000 who died and their families.

There are some things (such as the identity of the CIA agents) that we simply do not need to know. Why not actually think for once in your life?

Torture is torture whether it is illegal or not.

and what your definition of torture is differs from what the law states.

What is the Federal Law that outlaws waterboarding?

Waterboarding isn't even torture as defined by the Geneva Convention. And even if it were considered torture by Geneva Convention, Unlawful combatants (terrorists) aren't covered by the Geneva Convention.

There isn't. Thats the reason why it was politicized by the left in an attempt to gain power.

One must keep this fact in perspective. Our own troops have been waterboarded for the last 60 years in SERE. I'm sure several liberals went through SERE and consequently got out of the service and began their anti-war protests about Viet Nam yet we heard NOTHING about waterboarding as torture back then. NOTHING was said about waterboarding until it was politically expedient. It was used specifically to paint President Bush, his Administration in a bad light and it was used to turn the American people against their President. This is one of the reasons I cannot stand the left and progressives. Their the worst type of hypocrites.

I love this country as much as you do.

For that reason, I do not want to see my country EVER sink to the level where we accept using torture as a way to gain information. This country was built on the rights of the individual. Those rights apply to all people regardless of what crime we think they may have committed.
I am not willing to make excuses that torture is OK if we only do it to three people or if we think we may save lives. People who engage in torture always have excuses why the victim deserves it.
What made this country great was its values and humanity. To sink down to the levels of our opponents because "they did it first" is inexcusable

Waterboarding isn't torture and, enemy combatants don't deseve the same rights as us under Miranda.
It's as simple as that, and no amount of liberal insanity will change those facts.

We understand. You and those who believe as you do would have preferred another 9-11 type attack on the West Coast. No problem then.

Oh yeah the tapes were gonna be on the 5 oclock news. Are you REALLY this fucking STUPID!!!??? If you think the CIA or FBI has the RIGHT to refuse to obey ORDERS BY THE CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT then it is YOU who is PISSING on what our FF set up here in AMERICA!!! Tell me are you AWARE of the number of "Intellignce Letters" that the FBI ABUSED!!!??? I doubt you are cause you are a little BITCH PUP being led around by your LEASH by your OVERLORDS!!!

Those rights apply to all people

Those rights DO NOT apply to citizens of another country. That's why President Clinton started the CIA secret prison system and rendition.

Read your Constitution

The rights apply to the accused not accused Americans. If a foreign citizen commits a crime in the US, he is afforded the same rights as an American.

O.K. Ollie you "TOUGH GUY" Here's a little scenario for you,

You have captured a terrorist who has planted a NUCLEAR bomb in the middle of L.A. You know for an ABSOLUTE FACT that he planted it! Would you put his 18 month old son in a vat of boiling oil!!!??? Would you RAPE his 9 y/o daughter if front of him? Would you cut off his wife's TITS and wrap them on his head like ear muffs?

TELL ME OLLIE IS THERE NO FORM DISGUSTING TORTURE THAT WOULD BE OFF LIMITS FOR YOU!!!???

Well then, I guess you summed it up. Seeing as though Al-qaeda declared war on the US back in october of '98, in fact it was their leader Bin laden who declared said war. The attack was an act of war and there was nothing criminal about it. Therefore, they get no rights under Miranda. Only an uneducated Kool-aid sucking Obamabot would believe otherwise. Case closed, period.

It would seem that ol' Barry the messiah and his equally inept buddy Holder are beginning to realize this. The trials in NY are history.

You would think though, that a constitutional scholar like Obama would have realized this before once again making a complete embarrasment of both himself and his equally inept administration. But then, as he has proven over and over again, Obama doesn't really know much about anything. After all, he's been stepping all over the constitution since day one.
