Which raises a very important question. . . best looking when their husband took office, or at marriage?

That’s a fair question. Unfortunately at the time of marriage they were not the First Lady. They only have the title of First Lady during thei husband’s tenure as president. Their beauty before their husband taking office or after leaving office is not valid information for a discussion about First Ladies. One would think that the men elected at a younger age would give their wife an advantage here but I don’t see Hillary getting a lot of votes here either.

Just for being a beautiful person inside and out we have had a lot of beautiful First Ladies . We have been fortunate in that area.

Martha Jefferson was never first lady, she died in 1782 at the age of 33.

"As a widower, Thomas had a long-standing relationship and children with Martha's half-sister, Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman who was three-quarters white by descent."

Most folks agree, that Jefferson was carrying on a relationship with her half sister for many years. I do not know if that continued in his presidency, but considering how he treated their (alleged,) offspring, and how the Jefferson family looked after Sally after Thomas' death, it is probably a safe assumption that their relationship continued while he was president.

There are no known, and likely were never made, portraits of Sally.

However, accounts are, she was indeed a beauty.

Perhaps, if Jefferson and Sally had lived in the twentieth century in a time where relations between folks of any ethnicity are widely accepted, and had he been able to marry her and been in office in our day, indeed, Sally might have been the most beautiful first lady this nation had ever seen.
