But if you had to guess, what type mammal would you guess whales came from?

Turns out you cannot always go by looks.

Turns out that after genetic analysis, the closest land animal (actually semi-aquatic itself) is actually a hippopotamus.

Whales are one of the gentlest sea mammals. Hippos are one of the most dangerous land animals.

Don't ever get near or piss off a hippo.

Unless your mother in law can strain krill from the sea with her teeth, I'm guessing that the similarity in appearance is just coincidental.
