The Soviets and the Chinese Communists murdered far more people than Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan did.

I respect Victor Davis Hanson as a person, and I agree with many of his views, but he has some serious blind spots when it comes to WWII.

Read something other than FDR-Truman-era-propaganda history books. A sizable number of Chinese sided with the Japanese during WWII, preferring Japanese rule to Communist or Nationalist rule. The Chinese Communists killed at least 20 million Chinese after they seized power, not to mention the hundreds of thousands they killed before Truman and Marshall enabled them to win.

Imperial Japan was fiercely anti-communist and had perfectly valid concerns about halting the spread of communism in China, especially in northern China (particularly Manchuria). The Japanese were also decidedly pro-American until FDR came along and started implementing Soviet foreign policy goals in China.

I know this is wasted on you, but for the sake of others I will note that any analysis of Imperial Japan has to consider (1) the bitter division between the moderates and the militarists, (2) the moderates' inability to fully control the militarists, and (3) the moderates' strong opposition to bombing Pearl Harbor until FDR rejected every single Japanese peace proposal and made it clear he was going to strangle Japan's economy with sanctions.

Even after FDR refused to meet with Konoye and rejected Tojo's final peace offer, many moderates still argued against bombing Pearl Harbor, but, thanks to FDR, the militarists got the cabinet to approve the Pearl Harbor attack.
