Baseball was never the "national pastime." TALKING ABOUT BASEBALL was (arguably) the national pastime. At the time when this was declared, the number of people who actually watched baseball was relatively miniscule. There were a limited number of teams, and they were all in a relatively small quadrant of the country (Boston to Chicago, and south to DC), but it was written about extensively, and people (MEN) liked to talk about it. There was no baseball in California, Texas, the Northwest, or the Southeast.
Football combines the worst things about men and America. Gratuitous violence, committee meetings (huddles), and athleticism. Now it promotes narcissism among the players, mostly "Black" players. If the sport of football were abolished, the only negative effect would be an increase in the crime rate.
