Imagine if Iwo Jima had never happened. How many more members might be here talking about their grandfathers? That was not the only other option. It is still mere speculation. Not really. If the US had gone with Operation Downfall and invaded mainland Japan. Millions of Japanese could have died.Speculation.Dropping both of those bombs saved civilian lives. The Big One dropped on Nagasaki and Heroshima was intended to kill as many civilians as it took to make the Bushido Japanese holdouts surrender unconditionally.
Of course it's speculation, but based on the data at hand.
Even worse, if the Invasion would have faltered we probably would have had to ask the Soviets for help, and they would have a price.
Picture a "North Japan" and "South Japan"
Iwo Jima happened because the Japanese would not accept unconditional surrender. the 2 atom bombs happened because the Japanese wouldn't accept unconditional surrender.
