One of the radical inventions of Judaism and its legal system is the fact that human life is made in God's image, hence murder is wrong, and no one, rich or poor alike, is exempt from being punished for it. Pagans didn't value human life, except as according to their status, and one merely paid a fine based in the victim's status, whereas Jewish law demanded a life for a life, and the rich couldn't buy their way out of it.
