What Makes Socialism So Attractive?

Especially to the young?

Why are the young so enamored with Socialism/Communism/Liberalism?
It may not be what seems to be the answer, free stuff.

The Answer may be something inherent to the human condition: a desire to be unique, and independent, and to make your own rules, and not have to answer to anyone else.

1.When Albert Camus wrote “The Rebel,” he put his finger on an aspect of human nature that most of us have, more so as youth, but, still, throughout our lives. We yearn to stand out, to be different, …we see it when the prettiest girl runs off with the ‘bad boy,’ or when the wild haired radical is the one everyone is talking about. True, family, and the desire for success often smooths the edges off, moderates how ‘different’ one chooses to be, and sometimes, later on, when we’ve given up most of that rebellion, we might come to resent those who actually carry it off…..but in our youth, we have it.

It’s all about the degree and desire to rebel.

2. Freud claimed he could document and explain that need to rebel, relating it to a biological phenomenon…. “The Rebel Instinct: How Each Generation's Need To Out-Rebel The Previous Generation Is Pushing Society To Wild Extremes” The Rebel Instinct: How Each Generation's Need To Out-Rebel The Previous Generation Is Pushing Society To Wild Extremes

But whether it is psychological or biological…….it appears, most significantly, to be political.

3. A tip of the hat to Freud: there is no disputing the desire to stop taking orders from parents. OK. But it grows, in many, to the desire to not have to show respect, take orders from, or to mirror the style and tradition of an older, more successful generation. Perhaps the claim that socialists/communists are all about greed, to take from the successful without the work that went into that success...’You didn’t build that!’ …isn’t just to get the material things…

........it’s the psychological reward of rebellion.

Perhaps the rebel wants to gain that success by a different path, one that doesn’t require looking like, sounding like, and behaving like, our elders, that explains the 50% of Democrats who are socialists. Enter Bernie Sanders, stage Left.

Now…..get this, the fly in their ointment:

The problem for those rebels is that they have given up the intellect and the education that reveals what Socialism, Communism, Progressivism produces for societies, always:

....serfs, slaves….or corpses.

I don't know...

I , personally, do NOT WANT "SOCIALISM!"

I merely wish to live in a GREAT COUNTRY where, besides capitalistic, economic freedom every citizen has access to AFFORDABLE education and health care.

Seems to me that to ensure Americas greatness in the future we really NEED to provide EXCELLENT EDUCATION to as many people as we can.

why do you want Americans to be stupid?

what makes hate so attractive to you?

5. In Jung Chang’s autobiographical study of three generations of her family, “Wild Swans,” taking place during the period in which China went from the historical China, to the communist version, we see many of the same changes that are taking place in America today: old restrictions broken down…..with the ‘rebels’ not realizing that their brave new world would come with even more rigid ones.

The women of her family saw the communist’s promise to enforce equality between men and women as their chance to change the lives that had been dealt to them. But…with that came an even more rigid set of ‘party’ restrictions, just in the opposite direction from what had been traditional, but even more punitive: they told her who she could marry, and when, and how.

With, seemingly, good reason….

“The Communists were trying to institute a frugal approach to weddings, which had traditionally been the occasion for huge expenditure, far out of proportion to what people could afford. It was not at all unusual for families to bankrupt themselves to put on a lavish wedding.” Chang, “Wild Swans”

Free choice was still subverted to ‘I know what’s best for you!’
That's the message of every totalitarian regime.

"Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" ("The community comes before the individual") concretizes the collectivist belief that individuals have no rights and that "the greater good" is the only standard of value. Under such a system, man is not an end to himself, only a tool to be sacrificed for the FĂźhrer, autocrat or ruling mob.

Only capitalism regards man as a sovereign individual with an inalienable right to his own life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Government recognition and protection of individual rights is the hallmark of a moral, peaceful, productive society."
Sipsey Street Irregulars: The lie before the crime. "Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" ("The community comes before the individual")

At least parents wouldn’t kill you for misbehaving.

Humans have existed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million years, and capitalism has only existed for a few thousand years at most.
Humans are inherently socialist or communist,.and all families, tribes, etc., have always been that way.
When primates came down out of the trees, they had no fangs, claws, armor, or speed, so then like Meerkats, their only defense was cooperation. They sacrifice themselves for the defense of each other. Food is always shared.

And now, your education continues:

From a speech by Rev. Robert A. Sirico, President, Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty.
Delivered at Hillsdale College, October 27, 2006

1. Modern history presents us with two divergent models of economic arrangement: socialism, and capitalism. One of these appears preoccupied with the common good, and social betterment, the other with profits and production.

2. In its modern beginnings, socialism was optimistic and well intentioned, without the overlay of its contemporary varieties that tend to bemoan prosperity, romanticize poverty, and promote a view that place individual rights are a secondary concern. This is to say that the earliest socialists sought the fullest possible flourishing of humanity, “the common good.”

3. A half-century before Karl Marx published the Communist Manifesto, there was Gracchus Babeuf’s Plebeian Manifesto, which was later renamed the Manifesto of the Equals. Babeuf’s early (1796) work has been described as socialist, anarchist, and communist, and has had an enormous impact. He wrote: “The French Revolution was nothing but a precursor of another revolution, on which will be bigger, more solemn, and which will be the last…We reach for something more sublime and more just: the common good or the community of goods! Nor more individual property in land: the land belongs to no one. We demand, we want, the common enjoyment of the fruits of the land: the fruits belong to all.” Here, then, are the major themes of socialist theory. It takes very little interpolation to find that opponents profit at the expense of the environment, and conditions of inequality in society.

4. For Babeuf, socialism would distribute prosperity across the entire population, as it would “[have] us eat four good meals a day, [dress} us most elegantly, and also [provide] those of us who are fathers of families with charming houses worth a thousand louis each.”

5. Oscar Wilde: “Under socialism…there will be no people living in fetid dens and fetid rags, and bringing up unhealthy, hunger pinched children in the midst of impossible and absolutely repulsive surroundings…Each member of society will share in the general prosperity and happiness of the society…”

6. Marxism rested on the assumption that the condition of the working classes would grow ever worse under capitalism, that there would be but two classes: one small and rich, the other vast and increasingly impoverished, and revolution would be the anodyne that would result in the “common good.” But by the early 20th century, it was clear that this assumption was completely wrong! Under capitalism, the standard of living of all was improving: prices falling, incomes rising, health and sanitation improving, lengthening of life spans, diets becoming more varied, the new jobs created in industry paid more than most could make in agriculture, housing improved, and middle class industrialists and business owners displaced nobility and gentry as heroes.

7. These economic advances continued throughout the period of the rise of socialist ideology. The poor didn’t get poorer because the rich were getting richer (a familiar socialist refrain even today) as the socialists had predicted. Instead, the underlying reality was that capitalism had created the first societies in history in which living standards were rising in all sectors of society.

“In fourth grade, American students outperform most other countries in reading, math and science. Fourth-graders score in the 92nd percentile in science, the 58th percentile in math and the 70th percentile in reading, where they beat 26 of 35 countries, including Germany, France and Italy.

But by the eighth grade, American students are only midrange in international comparisons.

By the 12th grade Americans fall from the 92nd percentile in science to the 29th percentile. While American fourth-graders are bested only by South Korea and Japan in science, by 12th grade, the only countries the American students can beat are Lithuania, Cyprus and South Africa.” Coulter, ‘Godless’p151

The only solution is to wrest the education system out of the hands of Liberals/Democrats/Progressives, just as earlier Republicans pried the slaves away from them.

Here's the thing: Until you have had the experience of working to support yourself and actually seeing how much of your hard-earned money goes out in taxes, you lack the "wisdom" to understand why Socialism is evil. And it is evil. It is theft. Taking money from one group of people who have done nothing wrong, and giving it to others who have done nothing to earn it. That is definitional theft.

A large percentage of Bernie's supporters either have not had that experience, or have had the experience generally, but in a protected environment - government employment, foundation employment, employment in the Arts, and so on.

As I have mentioned repeatedly in this space, if the vote were limited to those who have worked Real Jobs in the Real World, and who have paid at least a nominal amount in FIT for a few years, the entire Democrat party could pack up its tent and leave town, and nobody would even notice.

Republicans are bad examples of working if this guy in the white house is any example. He's been mostly goofing off playing golf and tweeting for three years. Anyway, any links to prove that republicans work harder than democrats?

People are attracted to socialism because they want somebody else to take care of them. In the case of the young in particular, they have always had their parents do that, and since these same parents did not prepare them to be an adult, they simply look to government for their nurturing.

The OP made a strong argument that there is another factor in effect.

Seems to me that to ensure Americas greatness in the future we really NEED to provide EXCELLENT EDUCATION to as many people as we can.

why do you want Americans to be stupid?

what makes hate so attractive to you?

Yeah cause red states score real high when it comes to education...

and do no production themselves, at all.
I agree with that. However, the wealthy risk their capital to finance the means of production.

This isn't a cut and dried situation we operate under- capitalism, properly regulated, will cure the ills of inequality, perceived or real. Crony capitalism with a top down (gov't) intentionally misregulated system of borrow to spend enslaves all who participate. Degree of enslavement is the difference. The less you earn the more you're enslaved. The more gov't regulation the more obstacles that have to be circumvented which requires more money- the ones with less have to borrow to succeed- once they succeed, if they do, they become the villain to be demonized by the lesser than proponents-

Can you define 'the wealthy.'

Socialism is the antithesis to the individual being "unique and independent".

Yeah cause red states score real high when it comes to education...

"...red states ..."

Point of order....and point of education.

One indication of how fearful the Bolshevik.....er, Democrat Party is of their long association with communism is, is their claim to be "Blue States"

1. Remember when the 'red states' were Democrat, 'cause, well, Democrats/Liberals were so closely identified with communists, reds, socialists....

Then the control of the media really paid off for the Leftists....and now the obfuscation is complete.

2. Red is traditionally associated with socialism and communism. The oldest symbol of socialism (and, by extension, communism) is the Red Flag, which dates back to the revolutions of 1848. The colour red was chosen to represent the blood of the workers who died in the struggle against capitalism. All major socialist and communist alliances and organisations – including the First, Second, and Third Internationals – used red as their official colour. The association between the colour red and communism is particularly strong. Communists use red much more often and more extensively than other ideologies use their respective traditional colours.

§ In Europe and Latin America, red is also associated with parties of social democracy, and often their allies within the labour movement. Sometimes these parties use pink instead, as a "moderate" colour instead of the more "radical" red.

§ In the United States, since the year 2000, the mass media have associated red with the Republican Party, despite the fact that the Republican Party is a conservative-leaning party.
Political colour - Wikipedia

3. "The former system made more sense and was deliberately changed by media partisans who didn’t like to suggest Democrats should be associated with the color red....What’s a little more surprising, however, is how easily Republicans fell in line, apparently without realizing the reason they went from blue to red overnight. There’s even a Republican-leaning opinion site called RedState.com. How shortsighted and gullible can you get?

That made even more sense because Reagan’s convictions were decidedly and unabashedly anti-red.

I propose to you it’s time we – real Americans, the rest of us – stopped being manipulated like this."
How red states turned blue and vice versa

4. The Democrats should be Gray….reminiscent of the outfits they wore when they were the Confederacy, and we’re Blue….the color we wore when we pried their slaves away from them.

more horseshit. We have near monopolies BECAUSE of government regulations, Why can Walmart destroy every small business in a town when they build a store? Because small businesses are hamstrung with regulations and taxes the huge businesses can bury with profits.

What we need is a truly free market place, not one controlled from DC.

As to wages, you lefties bitch about Walmart wages but you praise the system that allows them to get away with paying low wages..

you bitch about corporations buying politicians but praise the politicians who are bought.

You libs are nothing but a walking contradiction.
Well yes those are some of the reasons why it is broken. You seem to be aware our capitalism is broken.

Your 100 million Mexicans “broke this country”....You can draw a straight line from all issues right to your illegals.
