In the 1960s when the WTC was designed and built, they never gave any thought to someone deliberately flying a jumbo jet into the WTC. All they considered was the possibility that a small private plane might accidentally hit it on a bad weather day or something.

When those jets hit, their explosion blew off the fire-retardant coating that was supposed to protect the structural steel. The WTC was a novel design: a strong central tower for elevators, plumbing and wiring with a rather flimsy outer shell that could not even support itself.

All that kept the outer shell in place from twisting and collapsing was the interconnecting floors which tied the central column to the outer skin.

IIRC, that outer 'skin' also had large interior tabs which carried a significant part of the weight of each floor. Sort of similar to modern aircraft design where the stressed outer skin is also part of the structural integrity.

The heat of the fires was intense enough to soften (not melt) that outer skin such as it began to bend and bow, pulling those tabs out and away from supporting the floors they had held.

Once enough weight starts to fall and impact the floors below it becomes an exponential force that peeled away those outer skins like a banana.

You're correct about the outer ribbing and also about the softening from the heat. But don't forget that the literal impact from the planes blew out a significant portion of the outer ribbing over several flows, further lessening the overall integrity of the structure.

YUP!
Which is how the floors above fell straight down and provided weight and momentum to start the pancaking of floors below as the outer skin peeled away and broke off.

Added note is that the whole complex shared common foundation and basements which is how the damage of support for WT7 occurred and made it collapse.

Note also there was an earlier attack in Feb. 1993, using a truck bomb in the basement garage of the towers. The intended parking spot, which was calculated to top one tower into the other, was occupied when the terrorists arrived, so they had to park a space over. Their plan came that close to working.
