For the Republican Donor Class the main issue is taxes: they want tax cuts; they fear tax increases. They also like a stock market that rises.
However, there are not enough people in the Republican Donor Class to win elections. Consequently, Republican politicians campaign by appealing to the social concerns of those who are not rich.
The Republican Party has become what the Democrat Party used to be in the South: that is to say it is the party of the white majority. However, younger whites usually vote Democrat. So do whites with college degrees and above.
Most Republican voters are white blue collar workers, and retired whites.
Reagan appealed, and Trump appeals to nostalgia for the 1950's. Of course, they do not and did not want to return to the top tax rate of 91%, which existed during much of the 1950's, and they do not want and did not want to return to the strong labor unions which also existed during the 1950's. Their appeal, therefore, is dishonest.
I see Trump as one who appeals to those who fear that social changes are working against them. Christian conservatives fear a society that is becoming more secular and hedonistic. White blue collar workers fear being replaced by non whites at home and abroad, by computers and industrial robots. Small business owners fear socialism, when they ought to fear the power of big companies to drive them out of business.
Biden supporters, of whom I am one, like Joe Biden, but we do not expect him to work miracles. We are motivated mainly by our dislike and our distrust of Trump. We do not see Trump as a tribune of those who have lost ground to the economy of the twenty first century. We think he demonstrated his true loyalty by cutting taxes for the rich. His personalty disgusts us. We think Trump is shallow, ignorant, and dishonest.
