So people are left with a choice on family planning.
For most middle class earners, the choice is to sacrifice some luxuries and have children or to not have children and have these luxuries. As adults are much slower to mature these days, many are choosing luxuries over family. New cars, Starbucks, movies, dining out, etc. They can’t afford new cars but that doesn’t prevent them from financing them. Most credit card debt isn’t accrued from paying the light bill or buying groceries, but rather luxury items that weren’t needed, just wanted. It isn’t coincidental that personal debt, minus house debt, has grown significantly over the last couple/few decades.
Also, many aren’t having children because of the inconvenience and additional responsibility. They want to be able to do as they please when they please. No planning vacations around kid’s school vacation schedules or forgoing the night at the bar/club after work or on weekends.
Bottom line is that it is both financial and emotional immaturity that, in most cases, is leading to less births, not real financial concerns.
