We HAVE BEEN at war with Iran for a while now. It's just been covert.
Nobody really thinks in these terms....but those people shot protesting....those were "our" people that we mobilized due to information campaigns using the internet, television, and radio programs. Just like Iran, China, and Russia use social media for disingenuous information campaigns....who do you think they learned it from?

We have been at this sort of thing since the 80's....

There are covert wars and overt wars. When we bombed Iran's nuclear program....that was overt. Options were limited and so some kinetic energy was needing to be expended.

The Hezbollah attacks in Lebanon and Pakistan attacks in Afghanistan are part of this war....just precursors. Expect that the Houthis to get their comeuppance here soon too.

Russia and China used to be involved....that's over.....they know a bad bet when they see one. They are hoping for better performance out of their munitions and radar systems this time....we'll see what happens.

The most troublesome item in this war is the anti ship missiles....both of Russian and Chinese manufacture. They are extremely portable, capable of longer distances and difficult to intercept once fired. There's lots of them out there...the possibility of overwhelming our defenses for our ships exists.....of course that many in a location synchronized at the same time provides targets of opportunity too.

Deception is the primary rule for warfare.....nobody attacks without it. Because telegraphing your moves is the dumbest thing you can do in a war.

War is hard and difficult.
Things go wrong, equipment breaks or gets destroyed, the easiest paths all have been mined extensively and you never can seem to get anyone on the freaking radio and if you do....answers are always 2 hours too late. Bullets, armor, and weapons are HEAVY and always seem to need to be carried by hand everywhere. Food, fuel, and water supplies are always late in arriving and in limited amounts when they arrive....but everyone has extra rounds for you to carry.
And because this is the Middle East and their military is NOT as religious as the leadership of Iran would like....I do expect mass defections upon the dropping of the first few bombs. (Iran used mercenaries to shoot civilians....not the IRGC)
Every Iranian soldier is currently lying about being loyal to the Ayatollah....they want to live. And the second the bombs start dropping....they will defect because again they recognize that they are the targets and want to live...I expect that they will give up the Ayatollah regime quick....the proxies and Mercs? A bit slow.

People keep forgetting that peace isn't the absence of open fighting or conflict, it is the resolution of said conflict.

We didn't have peace after World War 1 with regards to Germany, we had a 20 year armistice. We had peace after World War II with regards to Germany.
