Oil prices, after falling last week, climbed on Monday as investors weighed a renewed exchange of military strikes between the United States and Iran against indications that both sides remain engaged in negotiations aimed at securing a lasting peace agreement.

Stocks were mixed, pulled higher in East Asia by the continued surge in interest in artificial intelligence, and lower in Europe.

The United States said it carried out a series of “self-defense” strikes in Iran over the weekend, the latest in a series of attacks in the past week. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced that it had struck a U.S. air base in retaliation for a U.S. attack on a communications facility.

It makes me think of a couple of adolescent brothers kicking each other in the back seat of a car during a long drive after telling mom and dad they'd stop fighting.

From a domestic political standpoint I can't see how trump can agree to the terms Iran is asking for. Especially after R's spent years hammering away at the Iranian assets returned to them by the US in exchange for forgoing a program to develop a nuclear bomb. Sending much (97%) of their partially enriched uranium out of the country.

The US has superior military might. Iran has control of the Strait, and consequently controls a vital lifeline to the world's economy. Concessions must be made by both sides for a negotiated agreement to work yet each keeps sticking a finger in the eye of the other. All the time the world's reserve supply of oil is dwindling. Which is Iran's hole card. How could Don, Pete, Tulsi, Marco, et al been so shortsighted as to get in to this intractable predicament?

Actually, it is truly great chess playing by Trump. Iran has been famous for dragging their feet and not really negotiating, dragging the process out forever. Trump is doing the very same thing to them, whereas Iran is begging for a quick resolution to the war and Trump drags it out and out and out, frustrating the crap out of the Iranians. Meanwhile, Israel is destroying and taking over Hezbollah day after day and Iran is struggling with the Hormuz blockade by Trump and Trump entices them with a deal that's just at the end of the carrot all the while until Iran finally restarts the war, making them look like the war mongers and not us. After Iran ends the ceasefire then we go in claiming defense. Totally brilliant.
