"What I sought in you was falsehood, not truth...." (Confessions of St. Augustine - 354-430 A.D.)

This was a statement made by St. Augustine who was reviewing his life prior to his baptism in his thirties. We see the same in this Religion forum from people today we see people proclaiming:

What I seek in God is falsehood, not truth.
What I seek in Christianity is falsehood, not truth.
What I seek in the Jewish faith and Jews, is falsehood, not truth.
What I seek in Islam and Muslims is falsehood, not truth.
What I seek in any person of any faith or religion is falsehood, not truth.

Over 2200 years ago, we see the same thing we see today--people seeking falsehood not truth. I am particularly interested in why people seek falsehood in God, but it not just God we have a tendency to seek falsehood. How many who despise any President or any person, ever leave off seeking falsehood about that individual and instead seek the truth? But to start off....Why seek falsehood in God, and not truth?

those who live in falsehood and denial for the uninterrupted history of recorded persecution and victimization of the innocent at the hands of all three desert religions - truly to the present day.

their denials are their own perpetuation of despotism being their true objective.

How do you know it's not you that is living in falsehood and denial?

that's you -

In the search for truth you've got to discover what's false. Many sects, organizations, authorities, and religions present falsehood as truth. Many religions have built their beliefs around false doctrine or a complete misunderstanding of God's truth.

So seeking the truth goes hand in hand with uncovering what's false.

Sure but if all one does is to criticize what he doesn't believe to arrive at what he does believe without ever criticizing what he believes, that's not searching for truth. That is confirming one's biases.

Critical thinking is challenging what one believes to test the validity of that belief. But in all cases of searching for truth, it must start with constructing what it is, not by arguing what it isn't.

Examples:
  • Non-believers asserting people of faith believe in a magic sky pixie.
  • At the time of the Crusades less than one percent of Christians were Crusaders, yet today all of Christianity is blamed for the Crusades.
  • One person, despite calls from Rome, was responsible for the Spanish Inquisition, and his was a political purpose not that of Church. All other Inquisitions were there to assist people who were in trouble with the government.
  • When those come forward with actual personal experiences of God, non-believers jeer that it is a mental condition.
I grew up among atheists, married an atheist. All of these people just quietly lived, affirmed that they simply had no belief in God. None of them felt the need to jeer people of faith, or make fun of God. They were supportive of believers in the family living their faith. There were times I got more support form them, than fellow family members of faith!

We see here over and over again where someone has a false belief of who God is, or states as truth some ignorant idea of what any faith teaches. When corrected, they stubbornly stick with their ignorance claiming that faith (Jew, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, etc.) teaches something they actually eschew. They cling stubbornly to their falsehood.

I do understand that anyone (believer or non-believer) in seeking truth, are going to uncover what is false, are going to honestly misunderstand, or despite good intentions, reach a wrong conclusion. However, someone who is throwing out "sky fairies", flying spaghetti monsters, etc., are prime examples of people who are deliberately choosing that which is obvious false. That is what I am speaking out against.

The unique manner in which to know what is false is to know what is true. If one knows the truth, that suffices.

11 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
