Gas =/= Cigarettes. As gas holds a useful purpose to the economy and improves peoples lives in terms of jobs, manufacturing, and transportation. We've raised taxes on cigarettes because it's bad for us, yet oppose raising taxes on gasoline? Avg price for a pack of Marlboros in the US is about $6. In the world, the highest is about $18/pack. Cheapest about 93 cents. When gas was around $3/gal it was almost $10 in Norway.
More expensive gasoline is, less people drive, and the less air pollution is generated. Higher gasoline is, the better.
Brilliant illustration of the liberal thinking!
Instead of finding better ways of providing services/goods,etc. TAX the golden goose to the point there is NO MORE golden goose!
Guess what is happening RIGHT now in New York City? Police are arresting illegal cigarette sales because of WHAT??? less taxes are coming in because they are too high and people are going around it!
Same thing holds true with gas. Federal government is going to raise the tax rate because there are fewer tax dollars coming in!
SO this proves the stupidity of using "taxes" to formulate social policies!
Rather then raising taxes on cigarettes, gas why not figure out a better way of providing less cancerous cigarettes and more efficient gas uses?
WHY punish people ? Because that's the ONLY way Socialists think i.e. that there are the elites, i.e. the Obama/Hillary of the world and the rest of us are stupid.
And of course they are so smart they get LIPs like you to think THEY are looking after you by raising YOUR taxes on cigarettes, gas as a way to protect you!
If it was a simple case of people paying for something to slowly kill themselves, then probably society would be better off without them.
But it isn't, as the rest of society has to pay in medical costs and social costs for another person's drug/alcohol/poison habit.
Allow healthcare providers to exclude smokers and drug addicts, and healthcare costs would drop dramatically.
They were excluded BEFORE Obamacare!
Why not go after the single biggest cost driver to insurance premiums?
$850 billion a year in claims that doctors submit out of FEAR to health insurance companies!
The fear is the doctor will be sued and as a result they duplicate tests, refer to specialists all that add up to $850 billion a year in what is called "defensive medicine".
All because lawyers that make $270 billion a year file medical lawsuits against the doctors.
As a result, insurance companies go ahead pay the claims KNOWING these are duplicate tests, etc. as the insurance companies know all they need do is
raise the premiums to make up the claims costs. Which again increases costs to people that want insurance.
Proof that simple tort reform works?
The Federal Tort Claims Act of 1946 which prohibits lawsuits against doctors under Federal contract is evidence in these statistics:
A) here is a study believe it or not! http://www.jacksonhealthcare.com/media/8968/defensivemedicine_ebook_final.pdf
Proof is 90% of physicians surveyed say they order $850 billion a year in wasted duplicate tests, referrals all out of FEAR of being SUED!
Physicians estimate the cost of defensive medicine in US at $650 to $850 billion per year.
--- Emergency medicine, primary care, and OB/GYN physicians are most likely to practice defensive medicine.
--- 79 to 83% of surgeons and OB/GYNs have been named in lawsuits.
"Physicians contracted by the federal government practice significantly less defensive medicine as they are protected against lawsuits by the Federal Tort Claims Act. "
-- BUT........Only 48% practice defensive medicine compared to 92% of non-government physicians.
So if only 48% of government contracted physicians practice "defensive medicine" yet 90% non-govt. physicians do practice shouldn't that
be proof that tort reform like what happened in 1946 would reduce the $850 billion a year insurance companies PAY OUT IN WASTED CLAIMS?
