kyzr...we must up the gambling odds. Europe is holding firm on this at least officially. Reduce our presence in Europe. We are going to argue national borders in a time when there is more strife on the planet. We can spend the last 35 years in the middle east spending trillions and trillions of dollars with no appreciation and yet receive nothing in return. We turned China into a giant. And they will have to be dealt with and we may not win.

True we spent too much money in the EU keeping the USSR at bay, and in the ME, and on Israel, and now we are $39T in debt and China is eating our lunch. Just a throwing a thought out there, why doesn't the US stick to the 1951 treaty and have major military bases in Greenland instead of closing all but one? If Greenland is so important, why did the US close the bases? Do they even know what's going on?

Simply because there is neither a Russian nor Chinese threat to Greenland. If there were, we would have more than just an early warning base there. The sea lanes are patrolled by US subs, monitored by land base radar and satellites.

The major reasons for closures included the end of the Soviet threat and abandonment of projects like Project Iceworm. Most sites were just missile silos but there was one large air base with long range bombers.

The 1951 treaty allows the US to create as large a military present in Greenland as needed.

The Trump's need for Greenland is exactly the same reason as his need to invade and control Venezuela, minerals and oil.

Rare earths which is what TRump really wants is extracted by huge open pit mines which create an ecological nightmare. Trump apparently believes Greenland is the ideal place for these mines. I doubt Greenlanders would agree. They 95% Inuits, native Americans deeply connected to the land and the wilderness. However, that should not be a problem because the US has been very successful in silencing complaints from Native Americans.

Greenlander's are not residents. They are proud citizens of Greenland and Denmark. If Trump took Greenland they would not be citizens but subjects or whatever Trump decides they would be.

Denmark would never sell Greenland to the US, it would be like the US selling one of it's states.

Our treaty with Greenland requires that we defend them, not attack them. Membership in NATO requires NATO to defend them. Our defense treaty with Greenland gives the US the right to unfettered access for defense of Greenland or NATO countries. Thus there is no reason why the US needs own Greenland to defend it.

Trump wants Greenland for only one reason and it is not to defend it. It's Greenland's minerals. Since Denmark will not sell, he will take it by force. This is so Trump. What he can not buy, he steals. No wonder he has so much respect for Putin. They are birds of a feather.

It is the NATO Countries of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Demark who have ports in the Baltic and land in Artic that are most responsible for monitoring military vessels in the Artic, not the US who is 1500 miles from the Eastern Arctic Ocean.
