Russia is “very close”, by what means, exactly?

Their Black Sea Fleet has been badly degraded by Ukraine using little more than drones. That’s not a force capable of projecting power into the Arctic, let alone seizing and holding Greenland.

The U.S. already has a military presence there, plus the ability to project overwhelming combat power from the mainland. That’s before even factoring in NATO and the fact that any such move would immediately trigger treaty obligations from multiple nuclear-armed states.

In other words, it would make zero practical sense and would be functionally impossible.
There’s only one country currently threatening Greenland, and you’re living in it.
What we think and what trump thinks doesn't matter. This is all up to the Greenlandets and the Danish people. I wish them the best. All trump has done is drive a wedge between US and one of our best allies.

This I knew for sure: if Greenland becomes a u s territory, Donald Ttump will not allow those polar bears to starve as the Danes are doing.

Greenland doesn’t have sufficient population to be a US state. If anything, it would become a territory like Guam or US Virgin Islands

Guam alone has nearly 3 times as many people

We have enough stuff we need to worry about right here at OUR HOME,
Look at all sides of a situation, then decide what your own mind tells you.
not the mounting tons of political propaganda.

SO you think Denmark can and will protect the National Security interest of the US when Russia comes?
Any attack on Greenland will be met by
overwhelming force by both the US and NATO. Our base on the North Shore of Greenland is a critical part of our early warning system.

You know some of the possibilities.
I am for the status quo, improved a bit.
Just a throwing a thought out there, why doesn't the US stick to the 1951 treaty and have major military bases in Greenland instead of closing all but one? If Greenland is so important, why did the US close the bases? Do they even know what's going on?

To become a state, the majority of residents must so vote. Since most Greenlanders do not want to become part of US, why would they want to be a state? What they want is to be left alone.

Good question. One that Trump will not answer because it will undermine his demand for Greenland. He has now given Denmark till June to give or sell Greenland to the US because it's too cold to invade now.

Since Denmark will never give Trump Greenland, he will send in the marines, plant the US flag and claim it for the US. He will then enhance our military facility on the north shore which he has always had the legal right to do. As winter approaches and the Inuit are too busy building up their supply of fish for winter to have a war with the Marines, most of Marines will return home as the victors in the battle for Greenland. Trump will probably create a holiday to honor the Greenland victory. Then he will proceed with his plans to invade Mexico, Columbia, or Antarctica. I expect he will add all the states on the American continents to the Trumpland Empire before the little men in the white suits carry him out of the Whitehouse.

Ok, I think you should steer clear of fantasies.

Remove all representation in Greenland and both use from a purchase of a small island for our defense purposes in that area. Let others protect Greenland. We owe it nothing. So, Europe, China or Russia will have the say on control of it.

so the residents in Greenland would assume ownership if under USofA rule??

~S~
Yep, they would keep their current form of government, just change flags, plus put about $250,000 each into their bank accounts, compared to their current $34,000 a year median income.
Stupid is as stupid does...

kyzr...we must up the gambling odds. Europe is holding firm on this at least officially. Reduce our presence in Europe. We are going to argue national borders in a time when there is more strife on the planet. We can spend the last 35 years in the middle east spending trillions and trillions of dollars with no appreciation and yet receive nothing in return. We turned China into a giant. And they will have to be dealt with and we may not win.

The idea that Russia or China could somehow occupy Greenland, triggering a war with NATO in the process, in the immediate backyard of the United States, which has the largest navy on Earth, is so implausible that a toddler could see through it.

This isn’t a serious national security argument. It’s raw power politics, justified after the fact with paper-thin rationales.

And given the complete lack of strategic necessity, the most plausible explanation left is not security but ego, specifically, the need of one deeply psychologically damaged individual to project dominance for its own sake.

The telling point of your argument is, that it is AMERICAN POWER that protects Greenland.

The whole idea that SELF DETERMINATION, should be enough for the NO to stick,

is based on the AMERICAN support of that ideal. That is what has given that idea ANY power since WWI.

Historically, such has NEVER been the case. Powerful nations with reasons to expand into weaker nations or areas did so as a matter of course.

This new era of "civilization" is based purely on AMERICAN POWER.

It is also worth noting that, when the people that are championing that idea most strongly for GREENLAND,

are teh same people that, when the context is illegal immigration, are all about dismissing the ideas that "lines on a map" mean shit.

THEN, it is the people that want to move and take residency, that have "rights".
