Well, in that passage, the people of Israel came to Samuel, the prophet and said that they, Israel, want a king to rule over them like other nations had.
And Samuel didn't like that but prayed about it. God told him that they were not rejecting Samuel, but Him. Samuel warned them that if they got what they wanted, their children would be servants of their king (and etc...). They demanded a king anyway.
This story seems to be a good one for showing how God often gives us what we want, even though He knows it will be bad for us. And no, I would not be the one to provide an explanation for that... I never claimed to understand God. Fortunately, Jesus Christ is all the God I need to know... or anyone else.
So yeh, Israel wanted to be like other nations and then as we read along in the story, we see what a bad decision this was.
This is a reading from the Missal, a book of Scriptures Catholics read and hear at Holy Mass... can't recall which day it is for but it is in January 2024 readings.
So..... The way i see things
looks like a theocracy is not a bad thing in the eyes of
God. It's apparently just a "bad" idea to humans
