To me, the good thing about leaving a shopping cart behind is it being there for a person who may need one as soon as they are out of their car, but if I don't leave it in a more appropriate place, I do not leave it where a car is supposed to be parked. I leave it in a spot where it will not be in the way, but that it will be there for anyone who may need it right there at their vehicle. The line that separates your spot and the one for the car in front of you is the best place to leave the cart if you can't get it to a more appropriate place.

The reason they have a place to gather all the carts is so that people know where to go instead of searching all over the parking lot for where you might have decided to leave one. Also, the kids who gather up the carts and take them back into the store where customers are supposed to get one don't have to run around everywhere because you were too lazy to take your cart back to the corral. You're not doing anyone any favors. You want to be nice? Offer to take some old lady's cart back for her so she doesn't have to walk.

^^^ Having a cart close by can be a help to those who may need one should they be returning something that is too heavy to carry through the parking lot into the store.
