what are some of your favorite song lyrics? why?

Probably the final cut by pink Floyd. The last line or two ties the song together and gives it's title meaning. Especially with the music it's sad in a cathartic way and the lyrics always stuck with me.

Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
And far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide
If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotguns in the hall
Dial the combination, open the priesthole
And if I'm in I'll tell you (what's behind the wall)
(Yahoo!)
There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith
Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?
And if I show you my dark side
Will you still hold me tonight?
And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?
Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
Would you take the children away
And leave me alone?
And smile in reassurance
As you whisper down the phone?
Would you send me packing?
Or would you take me home?
Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but...
Just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut

10,000 days has some amazing lyrics as well.

can't say that's my favorite Pink F song!

I can't even figure out what they are saying!

hate that... (but didn't read the whole thing --- didn't understand the first couple lines)

At first it's a man describing his depression and sadness. Like fish eyed lens of tear stained eyes, when you get tears in your eyes it's like a fish eyed lens on a camera. And goes on to describe getting past all of his defenses and escaping his sadness and making it to the priest hole, a priest hole was an escape route and hiding place for catholic priests during a time when they were persecuted.

Then it changes to him wanting to express his sadness and but also worrying about what will happen if he does.

Then at the end he is talking about trembling hands holding a blade ready to make the final cut, in other words cut his wrists to kill himself, but then the phone rang and broke his thoughts and he no longer had to nerve to do it.

Just like any other form of art it takes to some people and not others, it just grabs you or it doesn't.

Just like the other song lyrics I posted for 10,000 days, something about them worked for me. And Maynard is a lryical master even when they don't make total sense. Like the song Rosetta stoned where it starts off with a man in a hospital and a doctor talking to him trying to find out what's wrong then when it starts he starts saying insane stuff then begin to focus as it goes on telling a story of him using drugs to reach nirvana through hallucinations and is seeing aliens but is going crazy from not being able to remember what he saw.

Hmm... well, that was interesting, thanks for explaining

just to be honest about what I was thinking, though...

Reading your thoughts in Politics etc... it doesn't seem like you would go for this kind of... you know... meanings hidden behind "ambiguous" words..

I mean, in politics, you get right to the point, and say exactly what's going on in the world of politics..

which I prefer to ... u know... weird words that people cannot easily understand (in rock music)

:)

This song, Fool on the Hill always made me think of the statue of Jesus in (I believe) Rio deJaniero in Brazil, which is on a very high hill. Whether the Beatles were referring to Jesus or not, the words fit Him because... no one listens to Him anymore :(:dev3:

Day after day, alone on a hill
The man with the foolish grin
Is keeping perfectly still
But nobody wants to know him
They can see that he's just a fool
And he never gives an answer

[Chorus]
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning 'round

[Verse 2]
Well on the way, head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices
Talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him
Or the sound he appears to make
And he never seems to notice

[Chorus]
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning 'round

[Instrumental Bridge]

[Verse 3]
And nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do
And he never shows his feelings

[Chorus]
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning 'round

[Bridge]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
'Round and 'round
And 'round and 'round and 'round

[Verse 4]
And he never listens to them
He knows that they're the fools
They don't like him

[Chorus]
The fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning 'round

"In the Sunshine"

People of the world we live in
Don't let no one take our rights
Right to live in peace and righteousness
Science is supposed to work in our favor yawl
But when everything naturals destroyed
Put in the place of it is man-made decoys
Locking us into a world that ain't no world
Our senses ain't in touch with the universe now
Instead of going so fast into a new age
We ain't even got our present age down pact
We can't keep our own thing intact
Yet scientists talking bout a computer thing?
It seems to me while some are Scientifically masturbating
The rest of us are scraping to save our lives!
The plan is to reduce us to survival
No mo livin' in the sunshine, and I ain't with that now

In the sunshine

Now ain't nothing wrong with technology
As long as we control where it goes
But as of now, it's in the hands of cash flow
And cash ain't humble to God's plans at all
People whether white, black, red, or gold
Need to stand up upright and bold
Need to first grasp our minds and souls
Gotta learn to walk before you run oh
I think most people want the same things
Just to smile and live without so much strife
To be in sync with the one God that gave us life
And to have a little time to enjoy things
I want all the people to live in the sunshine
The way it was when it was divine
The way it must be in the end cuz...
That's the way it was in the beginning
