I don’t know why he limited himself thus. Everything east of the Dnieper and Odessa only make sense given the effort so far.

He would have to employ a different strategy once he crossed the Dneiper .
Latterly Russians have stood off on higher ground , cut the attackers to pieces, and then moved forward a few miles to repeat the same pattern .
