Dr. Kenneth Ring (
KenRing.org), a pioneer in
near-death research, explored this question through a series of informal surveys conducted with university students enrolled in a semester-long course on NDEs. His preliminary study — and two subsequent replications — suggest that exposure to NDE material may produce noticeable shifts in students’ beliefs about
death, the possibility of
life after death, spirituality, and the nature of
God. Many students also reported a reduced fear of death and a deeper appreciation for
life.
Although the studies described here are exploratory and based on relatively small samples, their findings raise an intriguing possibility: that the
transformative effects commonly reported by NDErs may sometimes extend indirectly to others through exposure to
NDE accounts and
research. If so, the social and psychological impact of NDE literature and education could be far broader than previously assumed.
In the following article, Dr. Ring presents the results of his initial survey and two replications, and discusses their implications for
future research on how NDE information may influence the wider population.
