Can you believe this!
Afghans fled the Taliban to reach Europe. This week, Europe invited the Taliban to Brussels.
Belgium handed five one-day visas to a Taliban delegation for a meeting on Tuesday, per AFP and Reuters. It's the first time the EU has hosted them since the Taliban took power in 2021. The subject of the talks? Sending back Afghans whose asylum claims got rejected.
And the timing is the ugly part. The EU still sanctions some of these Taliban leaders. It shut its embassies in Kabul years ago. Amnesty and Human Rights Watch are both asking Brussels to drop the plan, since Afghanistan is more dangerous now, not safer.
But around 20 of the 27 EU countries want these returns anyway, mostly for people with criminal records.
So the regime people ran from is the one Europe now wants a deal with.
Send this to someone who's been arguing about Europe and migration all year.
