Your comment reminds me of some former tenants of mine. They moved in very young and managed to keep up their apartment for several years. Both were fast food workers and neither could do any better because they loved their pot too much.

Better paying jobs require drug tests, so these adults stay with their MW jobs to continue their lifestyle. If they wanted to better themselves, they could by simply giving up the dope.

So nobody is forcing people to work low-wage jobs. As you stated, it's a choice they freely make.

Or free training. They offer that in the military, and in my industry, companies are willing to train you for free just as long as you sign a one year contract to work for them. We are still short 50,000 divers; many of them now making 80K a year or more.

The problem isn't finding people the problem is finding the right people. The problem this country has is the youth have been told they are worth a lot more than employers are willing to pay them until they show some initiative and dedication to the company. I don't want to train someone to do a job only to have them leave and have to hire and train someone else because they got offered a dollar more an hour to work at Burger King. I've hired a few college grads who had real potential but showed no initiative or drive, and way over estimated their worth with no experience in the field.

That's why many companies rely on temp services these days. You get to try out an employee long before hiring them. A few of our customers will only hire exclusively through temp services for that reason. They figure if a person is willing to work for lower pay, be on time every day, do the job with the ability and desire to learn, those people are worth offering a job to.

The major problem in our country today are all the drugs. Many companies drug test and these younger people won't give up the dope to secure a job or career. It's happening in our industry and industries across the country.

My father made a damn good living and pension being a bricklayer. Granted, it's very hard work. But the pay is around 50 bucks an hour with benefits and you are always in demand. The problem is the only people willing to do the work are those that can't pass a drug screen.

That's why the big push to Legalize marijuana nationwide, so the dopers can say you can't refuse to hire me because marijuana is legal. Talk about a motivation killer ever seen a motivated "pot head"? Slovenly bunch most often.

It doesn't matter whether a product is legal or not. Alcohol is legal, but if it's traced in your system, you can run into problems on the job.

As a driver, they have the ability to test me for "residual alcohol" which means if you drank too much the night before, they can give you a problem. They go by fractions of a percent to make that determination. What they say is, that you need at least ten hours since your last drink to pass should you get tested, but I would guess that all depends on how much you had to drink.

Same thing with using a firearm in public. You are not allowed to have any alcohol in your system if you carry and have to use a firearm for defense.

I would agree, if the job market was anything like it was when I was in high school or even before, but it isn't, and neither is being poor anything like it was then or before, either. The fact is the 'new economy' is producing shit jobs at far higher rates than 'skilled' jobs, off-shoring is still going on, and green cards and criminal illegal immigration was not a factor when I was coming up, even with being on the tail end of a huge 'baby boom' to deal with; the population was stabilizing and even decreasing, which is just what was needed with the massive increases in productivity and automation then going on. There were jobs like sacking groceries and gas station attendants for kids, many of which could be very well paying since people still tipped back then; being a sack boy part time at the new Skaggs-Albertson grocery chain over the 'rich' neighborhood in the afternoons, with a job at the front gate of the local drive-in movie made me self-supporting at 14. Try that now for the average kid even at 16 or 18 these days. to get a job on a forklift at a warehouse didn't require going through a temp agency shithole competing with criminal illegal aliens and having to pay to get some fake ' certification', either, and at the time those paid $2.50 an hour and up around here, where a garage apartment could easily be found for $40 a month.

Today we are also competing with foreign manufacturing and automation which took over more blue-collar jobs than anything else. Yes, we had Chinese products when we were young, but much of the merchandise you purchased was made in the US. Today, you'd be hard pressed to find US made products in stores these days.

It's hard to make a good living when companies are buying machines to do your job. In the last couple of years, even McDonald's and Wendy's are investing in automation to replace the people that took orders or made french fries. Eventually, nearly the entire restaurant will be automated.

The food industry was 'automated' a long time ago; that's why you see 3 or 4 employees in a Mickey D's handling 1,800 orders an hour during a lunch rush. Back in the late 1800' early 1900's they had those 'auto-serve' type vending cafeterias where you put in a nickel or a dime and served yourself. The market is anything that effects production and distribution and wages. The workers are certainly allowed to use any means to demand the price of their own labor, just like owners are allowed any means to increase their profit. That's why the free market sucks without reasonable limits.

Owners regularly spend vast amounts of money to elect politicians who will reduce safety regulations, and other things that reduce the unit cost of labor. Workers receive less pay and higher risks as a result, any you don't seem to have a problem with that, but when workers are able to elect politicians that will work for their needs, you whine. You love workers absorbing risks that should rightfully be the responsibility of the owners, Socialism for the rich is just fine for you.

Where do you find these rollbacks of safety laws? I work in construction, and the amount of safety is insane, and its almost always the companies that institute the restrictions.

Nobody gets tax breaks for moving overseas. The only tax breaks companies get are for moving expenses, and it doesn't matter if you're moving from Chicago to LA or from Detroit to Vietnam. Companies move because of intrusive and expensive government regulations and labor costs.

I can't speak for where you live, but over here, fast food places are not automated and they usually have nearly a dozen employees for rush hour lunch and dinner. However we never took a huge minimum wage hike so perhaps it's still economical to have humans instead of machines. If Democrats are able to take total control of the federal government and make $15.00 an hour law, that too may change.

I think part of the problem is younger people grew up entitled. Their parent(s) gave them everything well beyond their childhood.

When I was a young man, you were encouraged to start using your new wings. You dreaded the thought of living at home with your parents. In my day, your parents were not your friends, they were your parents and you couldn't wait to be on your own.

I knew people who were forced out of the house the day they turned 18. They were told by their parents, the day you reach 18 is the day you are an adult, and we no longer need to care for you. You grow up pretty quick under those circumstances.

And mind you social programs back then are nothing like they are today. They helped, but you couldn't' make a lifestyle out of them.

I don’t think aoc is entitled and, you are crazy if minimum wage was supposed to be a life time job? I get it that some people who are working as a buster or whatever are older. These social programs are running out of money and then what?
