I lived thru the 50s as a kid...they simply weren't all that wonderful. That's all hooey.

After reading a lot of Cold War books, I'm surprised that we weren`t all blown up. Of course, we had our desks in school to hide under for protection from H-bombs. As a child, I assumed that the adults knew what they were doing and Khruschev, Eisenhower and JFK were the adults in the room.

I had a cousin who joined the Marines and went off to Korea. He wrote back that the "slopes" couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a banjo. His mother was proud but scared into hysterics that he would be killed. He returned safely then became a cop. I guess he liked getting shot at. He retired with no holes in his carcass.
