Volcanic Ash of Gaza
It maybe a strange title but the volcanic ash of Gaza seems to be a permanent one. We learned about the volcanic ash of Iceland which was caused due to volcanic eruptions and that stopped almost all airports of Europe.
But what does it have to do with Gaza? Volcanic ash prevented people from traveling to and from European countries, and people felt how bitter it is to be prevented from freedom which Israeli siege stripped 1.7m of Gazans of.
Gaza International Airport is the only airport which was not affected by volcanic ash of Iceland. Passengers didnt have to stay for long time in the airport, no flights were canceled .But WHY? The answer is because the airport stopped working 10 years ago!
The airport was established in Rafah in 1998. It was able to handle 700,000 passengers per year and operated 24 hours and 364 days a year. The total area of the airport is stated in local units as (2.35 km2).
The radar station and control tower were destroyed by Israeli Forces aircraft in 2001 after the start of the al-Aqsa Intifada, and bulldozers cut the runway apart in January 2002. Since then the area of the airport has been experiencing more than one incursion from Israeli Forces repelled by Palestinians.
Israeli Siege imposed on Gaza started in 2007 and included closing all land and sea ports. As Gazas economy completely relies on importing everything from pencils to cars, closing these crossings turned Gazans life into hell. And war on Gaza at the beginning of 2009 made things even worse, since small factories and farms of Gaza were air-raided and bulldozed. Gazas economy is now paralyzed.
All in all, as long as volcanic ash of Gaza exists, Gaza will not get freedom
