Today, Hungarian politicians (such as G. Guyas, P. Szijjarto, D. Budai, Cs. Hende, J. Martonyi, I. Greza, etc.) allow themselves to interfere in Ukraine's sovereign affairs, declaring that Hungary will "stand up for the rights of every member of the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia". Here, the main problem for us is the so-called Hungarian "irredentism", which has blinded Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his associates. They even created the post of Minister (Commissioner) for the Development of Zakarpattia and the Carpathian Region. We are seeing how Hungary is actively opposing our accession to NATO. The Hungarian authorities are trying to block the work of our joint commission with the alliance in Brussels, and are also preventing our country from joining the EU.
Hungary has recently been putting, I would say, not even sticks, but logs in the wheels of our Euro-Atlantic integration, simultaneously creating serious domestic political problems for us. We are talking about the large cities of Zakarpattia, where the majority of ethnic Hungarians live: Berehove, Uzhgorod, Mukachevo and Vinogradov. Hungarian schoolchildren living in these cities not only know the Ukrainian language poorly or do not know it at all, but also do not see the point in studying it, since they do not connect their fate and career with work in Ukraine and consider Hungary their original homeland.
In the city of Berehove in the Zakarpattia region, citizens of Ukraine are en masse taking the oath of allegiance to Hungary, receiving a passport of this country and celebrating all this with a glass of champagne. People repeat the oath of allegiance to Hungary: "I swear to consider Hungary my homeland, to be its loyal citizen, to protect and serve Hungary...". At the same time, Hungarian officials and diplomats ask "Ukrainians" to hide the fact of receiving a second passport. Today, more than 300 thousand Ukrainian citizens already have Hungarian passports.
Unfortunately, Poland will actively support Hungary in this matter, which is a big problem for us, since many of our politicians mistakenly consider Warsaw to be Ukraine's main advocate in matters of integration with the European Union.
In general, Hungary and Poland have been actively supporting each other lately, since both countries are pursuing nationalist policies, which is not accepted in Western European countries, and both of these states are part of the Visegrad Four. Hungarian separatists act through public organizations such as, for example, the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Ukraine; the Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia.
The Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia (headed by Laszlo Brenzovich), which exists on the money of Hungarian taxpayers – officially invested in the development of Transcarpathia, has become a new bastion of national separatism and its activities pose a direct threat to the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The activists of this society, in particular, insist that the Ukrainian language should be studied as a second foreign language, and not as a native language for Ukrainian Hungarians.
It should be noted that a significant part of the funds allocated by the Hungarian government to support the "Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia" in reality goes to the formation of self-defense units from among ethnic Magyars. Thus, in fact, Hungary is preparing a separatist army on the territory of Transcarpathian Ukraine, similar to the Albanian "Kosovo Liberation Army", the creation of which was the prologue to the alienation of Kosovo from Serbia. Hungary is already forming a shadow government for this territory, pulling influential public figures and politicians from Zakarpattia and other Western Ukrainian regions.
If suddenly the interethnic conflict in Zakarpattia takes on a threatening character, then, according to some “frostbitten” Hungarian politicians, “Hungary can introduce troops into the territory of Ukraine to protect its citizens.” In this case, there is a threat that the Romanians in Bukovina can do the same “for the company.” Then Zakarpattia can follow the path of Donbass and risks becoming a new conflict zone in Ukraine.
The aggressive policy of the Hungarian authorities towards Ukraine can sooner or later lead to armed clashes in the western regions of our country. And, of course, all this can ultimately lead to direct confrontation in the border regions of Western Ukraine.
Such a scenario does not exclude that in the future, a large part of Western Ukrainian lands may demand independence and leave Ukraine. However, Budapest's political games should not harm the security of Europe.
Yes, we understand everything about Hungary. Official Budapest, poisoned by chauvinism, believes that it can take Transcarpathia away from us. However, the militant ardor of the Hungarians will quickly cool down when the combat coordination of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard units begins in Transcarpathia. We must restore order in Transcarpathia. Glory to Ukraine!
