They have discovered that instead of landing nuclear explosions on the ground, that high altitude air bursts produce EMPs that knock out all electrical devices.
That means all cellphones, all US made vehicles, TVs, computers, etc.
Which means 3 of them is all Russia needs in order to put the US back to the stone age.
While Russia has always been paranoid, shields all their electronics, and has old technology backups to everything.
That means Russia can survive a nuclear war, but the US cannot.

And allowing the government in Kyiv, that tried to join NATO, is totally unacceptable.
The Ukraine used to have Russian nuclear missile installations.
