The guy who told me is a corporate analyst who specializes in car company financial statements. He said it would be impossible for car companies to price their fleets if they did it the other way. Part of tarrifs are absorbed by the importer, and part are paid by the consumer depending on the price sensitivity of the buyer. So they have to distribute it across the fleet.
Of course, I could be full of shit again.

btw, if all of a certain model are built in the US, none of this matters.

Does any of it really matter? Since all the American companies are owned or partnered by foreign interests?
