US flight delays near 7,000 as government shutdown hits Day 27

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. air travel turmoil deepened as nearly 7,000 flights were delayed nationwide on Monday, with air traffic controller absences surging as the federal government shutdown reached its 27th day.

The Federal Aviation Administration cited staffing shortages and imposed ground delay programs affecting Newark Airport in New Jersey, Austin Airport in Texas and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Monday. Flights in the southeast were delayed earlier because of significant staffing shortages at the Atlanta Terminal Radar Approach Control.

Roughly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers must work without pay after a budget impasse between Republican President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats triggered the shutdown.

The Trump administration has warned flight disruptions will increase as controllers miss their first full paycheck on Tuesday.

More than 8,800 flights were delayed on Sunday.

There shouldn't be flight delays during a shutdown.
There should be no flights to delay. If the government is shutdown, it should shutdown. WW
Thune needs to go nuclear so there are no more shutdowns. The DC clown show continues...
Republicans didn't get elected to let democrats stop the BBB items.

They are waiting for the November 1st marketplace pricing to be released. They'll see what the public reaction is. I assume they will either put pressure on the GOP to address or hang that pricing on the necks of the GOP in the midterms.

As long as the government is willing to heavily subsidize it, prices will continue to rise. This is what Democrats want because it lends to more dependency on the federal government and ultimately more votes to keep the freebies flowing. If only working Democrats realized that they are being fleeced.

Show me on this chart where the ACA negatively impacted spending. The red line I added is a constant rate since 1980 and you can see its been a constant growth well before ACA and after ACA. You dont have any data to support your claim, do you?

Doesnt change my post. After Nov 1st the GOP will be hung with the new rates - open government or not. The federal workers you are talking about dont have to worry about their healthcare, just like the politicians dont.

You are ready to fire all of them anyway and you hate unions so why do you care what some union person for federal workers said?

all the gop is doing is letting the COVID subsidies for the ACA end like they were scheduled to end when the Biden admin passed it .. you do understand that don't you ?

There shouldn’t even BE federal workers unions! Do you know that we are paying federal workers close to $200,000 each to work for their unions?

The way you phrase something doesnt change it. The healthcare subsidies will be ended by this CR. The Democrats are standing up for them. The GOP is opposing them. In about 4 days the US will get its new healthcare rates and it will be a reality. The GOP will be hung with those increases so it doesnt matter when the CR passes.

Remember this the next time you for a dem, they wanted the Schumer shutdown

Given that the average Federal Employee pay is $106,500, even with about 30% for benefits that's about $135,000.

Remember folks - average - many make less than that will some are higher. Those higher earners of course would be the Executive Service that aren't in Unions.

Dumbass the CR doesn’t do anything to the subs but keep them funded at the same levels until they expire

The expiration date was set by Dems and xiden in their inflation act of 2022 and even then not all the subs go away just the expansion

Why do you think you can simply lie?

We are saying the same thing. The CR does not fund the subsidies. We can agree on that. The dems want them funded. The pubs do not. How you phrase it makes no difference in the outcome.

And the Republicans did it before that. This is what happens when Congress doesn't pass actual budgets. Neither of their hands are clean.

Your contention is that prices won't rise if the government more heavily subsidizes the cost? I've got news for you. People utilize more services when they don't pay anything or very little. Ask any doctor and they will tell you that Medicaid patients are often the most demanding because they aren't paying for the service. This increase can push prices higher. If consumers don't feel a raise in prices, providers and insurers are very likely to raise prices. I will agree that some of the healthcare price increases are for reasons not related to subsidies, but to pretend that subsidies don't affect prices, even if indirectly, is incorrect.

No we are not saying the same thing. The CR in fact does fund the subs at the same levels they have been at.
