If you had the opportunity to establish, organize and run a school. What would it be like.

My important features are:

1. Reading, Writing, Math only in grades K-3. We have watered down education so badly that the time is taken up with lessons on different types of families, visits from Healthy Bear to teach children how to brush their teeth, Fireman Freddie to teach children not to play with matches and stop, drop and roll, candy sales and puppet and orchestra performances, painting pictures in art, singing in music and playing dodgeball in phys ed.

2. Grades 4-6 include math subjects, creative writing and continue with basic reading instruction for those who are still behind grade level and literature for those on or above reading scores. The classes and courses are created for those who are not mastered the level and those that have mastered above, until almost all youngsters are on grade level which will make middle school easily teaching all students on or above grade level, leaving no one behind. Some history geography and science classes are available for on grade level students.

3. High School will be serving all students with diverse coursed algebra, geometry, calculous and trigonometry, science, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, earth sciences, US history, World History, World governments, Civics US, Constitution, Legislative Branch, Executive Branch, Judicial Branch of US Debate and Current Events.

If we spent our 5 1/2 hours of each school day on academics, we would no longer find ouurselves on the bottom of world education. Also, we would have an informed electorate ready to vote not only for a familiar name, but someone who share the studen''s own values.

What would your school look like?

There would be 15 minutes of recess time in the am and pm as well as a half hour for lunch. Classes size would be no larger than 20.

To go to this school parents (or parent) must sign intent to go to monthly PTA MEETINGS learning about Fire safety, parenting methods from psychology experts, candy sales, if they must have them, duscussion of pertinent subjects.

Students don't have to be on grade level to be admitted to this school, but attendance will be examined from the former school.
Home work will be assigned at least 3 times week. Each subject will be assigned what days they assign home work, 15 minutes for early elementary 20 minutes for upper elementary in each subject. Failure to bring homework back can results in demerits and "Study school" after achool.

The problem is not the schools; it is the parents. If they don't value education, neither do their children.

Start a school like that.

I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief, Jackson, that you aren't going to be designing a school.

Kids need to be taught about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as soon as they're cognitive-
Most importantly, kids need to be taught respect and that begins at home- not for authoritarian figures but for everyone-
The Declaration is the perfect tool for teaching respect- all men are created equal and have certain unalienable rights- there are no caveats in that phrase.

Tell me why, Old Lady.

My idea for public high school:

Freshman core - Marxist Studies
Sophomore core - How to be offended in three easy steps
Junior core - Racist and other versatile words
Senior core - Bitterness Studies

My idea for the smart kids:

Private school

And to save money, do not buy new books every 4 years. In most subjects, it just a waste of time and money. We all learned to read and we could still read with Dick and Jane and Jip the dog. Most subjects text don't change. Literature would still be teaching the classics, math can be taught the same way it was seven years ago, geography does not change and history needs updating say, every third year.

Retain the same hard cover books and buy three times the workbooks so you don't need to buy them each year wben they are either more expensive or obsolete.

If orchestra is not taught, a savings of instruments could be huge.

For parents who are not on welfare, they should pay a rental fee for the use of text books.

Going back to when we were responsible, and winning!

My son went to private school starting in second grade. What a change! His first test was a two page typewritten test on astronomy! Knock me over with a feather. Same students in every class and four studentsin that class went to work for NASA when they left college!. All students were exceptionally bright. I did not care for Bible studies. Each week, the students had to reciite a long portion of the Bible.Other than that, it was worth every penny.

I grant you parents can be a problem. But if you keep them informed and aware of expectations, they cannot complain when the grade comes out.

You know that's the ticket. Get their kindergarten butts in the chair straight up from the time they're five years old, no puppets, no toys, no singing, no painting, and make them work sums, read and write. They will LOVE school. They will LOVE learning. AND BY GUM THEY WILL LEARN.

(I mean look how well it worked for you above, eh? "Calculous". Ouurselves" "studen"s")

The Fundamentals needed to survive after school. Reading, Writing, and Math.........Then skills and Trades and something that will help them get a job, or go to college.

Federal Gov't OUT ............Dept of EDUCATION............GONE...

States should be the authority for schools in that state..........Not the Feds..........Not common core. Owned and funded by the STATE...........not the Feds.......So control is local as intended by the Founding Fathers.

It's a bit lengthy to put in a post, Jackson. I suggest you go to college as an education major and see what you learn.

Sorry about the length of the post. It was primarily about getting rid of the fluff and social engineering and stick to academics. Start young with reading, math and writing. Master tthose subjects early.

I have my degree in education, specialist in reading and master of education. short of a Doctorate. Taught for 32 years in the inner ccity.
