“So, Americans Left and Right wondering how to stanch the tide of extremism need to consider this. Somehow, much of our countrymen have slipped through the cracks and find themselves utterly alienated.” ibid
This alienation is the consequence of ignorance and fear, which soon gives rise to hate.
Conservatism is fundamentally reactionary and authoritarian, predicated on an unwarranted fear of change, diversity, and dissent – and the desire to turn back change and return America to an idealized past that never actually existed to begin with.
For mainstream conservatives this manifests as efforts to prohibit gay Americans from marrying, enacting laws hostile to transgender Americans, seeking to compel women to give birth against their will through force of law, voter ID laws, and policies intended to discourage immigration, such as taking children from immigrant families.
Rightwing organizations that participate in the Unite the Right movement wish to move beyond disadvantaging those whom they fear through force of law and use instead physical force, violence, and intimidation against minorities and immigrants.
But whether mainstream conservative or Unite the Right participant, the motives and source of alienation remain the same: fear of change, diversity, and dissent.
